Thickbars

What thickness do you feel is thick enough. 3''? 3.5''? 4''? I saw a pick of Richard Sorin in his gallery doing a DB deadlift with 125 pounds on a 3.5'' handle. Thats about the thickest I've seen. What do some of you thick bar fans think?

I watched a dwarf lifting weights on TV last night. The regular olympic bar was thick to his tiny hands.

There comes a point when the bar is so thick, the lift become a pinch grip feat. 5" bar? Pinch grip, not thickbar.

Fairbar is the answer; levels the playing field.

I have 2",2.5",3",3.5"and 4" thickbars and D/Bells,some solid, some revolving! I like to lift them all as the harder the challenge, the sweeter the victory.

To illustrate my point: Next time you happen to be around construction pipe that 8" or 10" in diameter, see how much of a grip your hand can muster.

The Atlas Stones will never serve as blobs.

A pound is a pound everywhere. A kilo is a kilo everywhere. Fairbar is fair everywhere. :mosher

Should the high jump be contested based on what percentage of your height you can clear? Should hurdles be lowered for runners with short legs? If you do those things, the smaller athlete will win. Same with fairbar. Fairbar is a good idea, but it doesn't really level the playing field IMO. Size and strength relationships are not linear, so it's very hard to compare strength on a relative basis. Agree?

Yes, I agree.

All I am saying is that Fairbar is fairer than non-Fairbar, and if we can level the playing field in any manner, we should.

The high jump cannot be made more fair, because the height is measured from the ground to the bar, but your analogy is a good one- perhaps there is someone who is not the record holder, but who in fact does leap higher on a percentage basis- but though that makes for good chat, the rules will not be changed.

Actually, I am not naive enough to think Fairbar will officially be adopted, but when two competitors each use Fairbar, how can it be unfair?

The dwarf that I mentioned in my previous post would (without measuring him) probably perceive the Inch replica as we would perceive a 4" bar.

It's just an idea I came up with awhile back. I thought it had promise, but most do not agree.

I like the idea. I a man's hand is so big that he can completly wrap his hand around a "thick bar" as if it were a regular bar...well...it stops being a test of grip strength.

Using a fairbar ='s using ones grip strength
