Jake Brooks
Day after day I try the #3 and it's always the same... mash it to within 1/4 inch and then hit the wall. How about some tips for us guys on the threshold of certification. Anything would be much appreciated.
Bearcat 74
Do some strapholds with a #2. Use the thinnest strap you can find, and shoot for 3 sets of 10 secs. WHen that is reached, add more weight.
Digdogz
Strapholds, negatives. Read previous posts for info on all these and what they mean! Good luck on that last little bit. Digz.
Matt Van Weele
I would also shot for the strapholds. Warren Tetting mentioned using thin band steel off of shipping containers. It's alot harder than using a strap because the knurling can't dig itself into the steel like a strap. Heath told me about one of his ideas where he used athletic tape. I've tried this too and it's very hard alot harder than any straps I've tried.
Jake Brooks
Pinch the strap between the handles? Negatives with a three?
Matt Van Weele
Pinch the strap between the handles? Negatives with a three? Yes pinch the strap between the handles and try negatives with a #4.
Digdogz
Correctomondo on both counts, Have a look in the gallery under 'British grip championship' and you will see a photo of a straphold in action. Negatives on the #3. Try pushing the beasty up against your thigh and hold it as close as possible for as long as possible for sets of your choice. digz. Jake Brooks
Is any one else here stronger with three fingers than with four? I sure am. I think my pinky finger may have Atention Deficit Dissorder! Do the rules state that the gripper must be closed with a full hand?
Vice
Ironmind rules here are the rules... doesnt say anything about using your full hand
Matt Van Weele
No rules against 3 fingers. I'm best with a full hand but one of the reasons I feel my left hand is not as strong as my right is because it's not as coordinated as my right. Particularly the pinky. HAMMERHEAD
Do what works for you. I personally havent had great sucess with strapholds. Here's what is working for me: 1. heavy negatives (read the article by Gorrilla Hands in the Facts section) 2. BTR with machine or gripper 3. Heavy singles 4. variety of gripper, there are othere gripper than CoC that are just as good if not better. 5. Focus Daniel son 6. Make that pinkie work for you. Brookfield has adressed this point in particular 7. Timed holds 8. Close range negatives with your tough gripper, after it opens that 1/4 inch slam it back shut a few times The beautiful things about strapholds is that it simulates a true negative, this is a negative which starts with one just being able to hold the handles together. -HH
Strong Man
do strapholds with the #3 just fold the belt or whatever your using a couple of times, thats what broke my 1/4 gap to 1/
Jedd Johnson
Brookfield mentions in one of his books that the last two fingers are one thing that holds people back on the grippers. Smitty came up with a good one that I think helped me out a lot in training my pinky. Take a golf ball and drill a hole through it. Next, wrap part of a coat hanger though it and make a mini Rolling Thunder device. Attach weight to the looped coat hanger with a strap or chain. I have been doing one finger lifts with my pinkies, and really like the results I have gotten. My pinky feels much stronger than when I started out. rbrown
I have found it helpful to take a gripper you would do strapholds with and modify it by filing down one of the handles so you can close it farther. When you go back to a regular gripper, it feels like you are not done yet when the handles touch.
Jake Brooks
rbrown, That exactly what Richard told me to do, I am Filing a #2 as I write this.
