Best Way To Shave An Arm(Gripper)

Recommended Posts

Posted

I am somewhat new to the arena of gripboard and did not see any post, on how to shave down a gripper arm, for 'over crushes'(prob not the correct cool word). Probably just use a metal file, but it seems like an easy thing to screw up? Do people do that, or take to a metal shop?

The last paper thin portion of my squeeze, is always, such a #$%^ for me. Any other suggestions, for bridging this gap, would be extremely welcomed. Once again, I apologize, knowing this has been mentioned before, with great likelihood, but I don't know the terminology well enough to aid my search.

Thanks in advance!

Yep just a regular flat bastard file works fine.

My two cents.

Just file one side. When you file and then attempt a close...you will find the the end position of the gripper is slightly different (shifted) that that of parallel to the other end. Basically, with two filed sides, it'll make it hard for both ends to meet evenly.

Additionally, grinders (and belt sanders actually) make super short work of them.

If it's your first...working manually is the way to go. It's actually quite hard to screw up since it takes off just a little at a time.

And, ideally very soon, CPW will have a filing service :)

Also dont take half the handle off at once.

I did that on my first filed gripper and (bad word filter)ed it up badly.

Take alittle, train a while, take some more off, train a while.

That's my 2 dimes.

Grip goals for 2016 - we'll see how many of these I can cross off;

Grippers; Cert GHP7, CCS 140, 146, 153 and 157lbs CoC3, MMS and 20mmBS 180lbs CoC3,5.

Pinch; Clean 20kg blockweight, curl 20kg blockweight, 1h euro pinch 45kg.

Next one I grind down I'm just going to do one leg. then it's easier to tell if it's closed. I have filed my 2 quite alot on both sides and it's hard to file it so the 2 legs meet up perfectly at the bottom and you know it's shut by looking at it.

Goal: close the #3 17/6/15

New goal: Certify on GHP 7
Main goal: CCS the #3

Filing is good, but you could also try coin holds, then when the coin drops out go for a complete close. Takes a lot of concentration but it's a good exercise.

To date I have filed only one gripper, but I found it rather easy to get the legs to meet evenly. The file I used is about 2mm thick and after taking the first material cautiously off with a machine I choked the gripper so far that the file barely fit between the handles. In this position it is not to difficult to file the right material away.

Last question on filing(90% likely true): It sounds like filing one arm is the way to go. Is there a preference in which arm to file down?

I think most people would say they will file the finger-side handle. That is, if you believe in putting the "dogleg" in your palm. IMO, ratings data has proved to me that it absolutely doesn't matter which way the gripper goes. But, having said that, once CPW has the filing service up and running we will file the finger-side handle by default. I do believe most people will say they prefer that, and for whatever reason, I would say that too.

Matt will CPW be using filing service to kind of dial in those hard to reach numbers? Like if you initially rate a gripper at 94lbs, but 100lbs is a very desirable rating will you file it down little by little to you get that?

Less likely to pinch skin on your palm when the finger side is filed.

I suppose we could do that, but it wasn't the intention. But all the same people could buy the rating service for their filed gripper. Or we could have a slightly discounted Filed and Rated service to do both. We could also do some pre-rated filed grippers for popular strengths.

Separately, along the lines of what you're talking about, we have been considering a service for Silvis grippers where you pick the rating that you want to receive it at. Like a Megalodon pre-set to 170 lbs. We could score the spring so you could reliably reset it to very near the same rating.

I file the dog leg of the gripper. Otherwise my fingers overlap the filed portion.

Yeah, the Silvis rating thing is happening. Kristy is working on getting the product posted. I'm sure it will be up over the weekend.

Basically you'll be able to request a preset number for the gripper and I will set it there and score the spring so you can reliably get back to that point.

Matt could you do multiple scores on the spring for multiple ratings?

Could yes. This is probably bad business but, honestly, what would you pay for that service? That's the only thing I would struggle with. Pricing that service as it relates to the time it takes to find the numbers.

For just the 1 number I was thinking $6.50.

That's a good point, but if I ordered two ratings at $6.50 each it would still be cheaper than buying two rated grippers, so I think people would still be open to it, or maybe it's just me lol

One way to find out; price and see. Obvious issue will be setting max and min ranges for each spring, but I think your minimum rating on them is conservative and I haven't "felt" in to the max.

Another option could be that you pick the number you want scored on the spring, but for a little extra you also get two numbers you can reset by measuring. Like flush and 1/2".

The same thing happens to me. The grippers on which I have already filed the finger side, I have to go dogleg out. I feel like I'll be struck down at any moment.
