Stephen Ruby Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 (edited) I'm trying to work on my grip again after a long lay off due to some injuries and life issues. I've been playing around with my grippers again trying out high rep mini closes working on being as explosive as possible to hear the click more then longer range of motion. I'm curious if anyone has tried this type of training and if it helped at all? in the past I used traditional warm up and full rep closes but I'm trying to experiment with other things now. Here is quick video I did with no warm up at the gym at the end of my workout messing around with a #3 for high rep which was probably silly but body was warmed up and then right after doing a coc #4 close and hold assisted(my goal gripper at the moment) rated near 215 Sorry for bad video had friend record and he isn't familiar with grippers. Yep I'm hoping to close it with a block set ideally at 275 in contest sometime next year. Its definitely a tough gripper hah got a ways to go before I can get it clean. HandsMcHanderson Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 You weren't kidding about it being explosive speed work that's for sure. I've done a lot of limited range explosive work with DL to fix weak points in my ROM and I think this is a very similar concept though taken to a whole nother level here. 2 Quote Grip Goals CCS #3 CoC Stay consistent!
KRC Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 Talk about explosive That was about 3x faster than I was expecting. Good stuff man. 2 Quote
bwwm Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 Yes, I have experimented with these in the past. They are very effective, almost too effective. I found I needed to be careful about over-training & joint health. However, they are great for busting past a plateau. I know one particular person who has pioneered an approach with these that is very effective. 4 Quote Martin

Paul Savage Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 It can help the close but i think this is too hard, if its a single rep on heavy gripper then fine, full power, but on a #3 when you are up near a #4 i would ease off a bit, especially high reps. I think it's much risk of injury doing that. Also by the #4 hold an the #3 clicking so loud im assuming your close is strong so more open hand training / full rom might be better for you. Good luck with the #4. 2 Quote Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/savagegainzcoaching/ YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRzim_aKbMtut2hMsRU3J3A Training log - http://www.gripboard.com/index.php?showtopic=36960&st=0
Alawadhi Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 Very strong. Not many can cheat close the 4 and hold it. Meaning you are doing something right. Also I remember the Romanian dude that came few mm within official coc4 cert said hia training is mini reps like 35+ reps on the coc3.5 I saw a video of him on YouTube mmsing a 4 he clicked ot so hard that you'll hear a loud click 1 Quote Read about me in my biography. acorn Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 (edited) One of my most effective programs uses mini's in a particular way. It got me to my last comp #4 close in 2013. They can be very useful. btw, very fast reps. You must have either been a thrower or could have been a good one with that kind of explosive power and your size. - Aaron Edited November 14, 2015 by acorn 4 Quote ** Retired **
bencrush Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 Stephen, it's great to see you back in the grip game man! I hope to see you smash the hell out of the #4 in 2016. You're looking very strong! 1 Quote
Royz Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 Dude! I can't even close my hand that fast without a gripper... Impressive! 3 Quote
Alawadhi Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 Btw, your thumb placement in the mini reps of the coc3 was putting you at a disadvantage. It must me harder. Did you do that on purpose for a more challenging close? Damn man! Quote Read about me in my biography. Stephen Ruby Posted November 14, 2015 Author Posted November 14, 2015 (edited) Thanks all for the suggestions/advice and encouragement. I think I might try out some explosive closes with some heavier grippers to avoid taxing my hand as much with the high reps stuff ( generally do 3 4 sets like that and my hand is pretty tired near the end) Btw, your thumb placement in the mini reps of the coc3 was putting you at a disadvantage. It must me harder. Did you do that on purpose for a more challenging close? Damn man! Yeah that was by accident, its a fairly easy gripper for me right now so I sometimes just yank it close and forget about proper hand placement. odin Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 Not a gripper guy here, but that's some of the most dominant gripper work I've ever seen Stephen...especially for someone who's taken a lot of time off grip! You look to be capable of anything you set your mind to do with grippers as long as your training is correct. 2 Quote Spoiler Bob Sundin 5'11 and 162 lbs. https://m.youtube.com/channel/UC7AZdUkf0aEDB3ET4UhU3Bg/videos
slazbob Posted November 15, 2015 Posted November 15, 2015 Stephen- Way to smash that thing! Too easy, 3.5 should be used in that fashion. You should be able to get 10 or so in that style...have you tried? Those mini reps are really helpful for jumping up. Quote
wobbler Posted November 15, 2015 Posted November 15, 2015 Crazy. I like to do those with (much easier or course) steel handled grippers. I think the extra weight and momentum of the heavy handles adds some value. Not that you need any tips obviously, but it might be worth trying out. Quote
