Kurt Lane Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 Going to buy a peice of 2'' pipe then put a collar down on it and leave about 6-8'' to add plates and another collar. Question is what do you guys think a good length for the handle should be? What do they use mostly in compititions or whats close to a sledge hammer length? I figure triaing lifting it facing forward and facing backward up off ground holding it at the end will work my levering strength... what do you guys think? I think you'd be better off just buying a sledge hammer, you'll be able to do more things with it that just a leverage pipe IMO Quote "When you have exhausted all possibilities, remember this--you haven't." -Edison. EJ Livesey Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 You're idea is def cheaper than a sledge but I'm not sure it's safer. I bought an 8lb sledge and welded bolts to it to make it loadable. Not sure if you have access to that stuff, but a local machine shop will do it on the cheap. Hell some guys will do a quick spot weld on their lunch break for beer. Jared Goguen Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 I've tried this and having a 2" pipe vs and wood handle is a big difference I don't think you gain much from the steel pipe. I suggest an 8lb wood handled sledge. You can always just drill a hole in the handle below the head and drop oly plates down the handle and hold them in place right below the head with a pin going though the hole. Jose Cabrera Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 I made one a while ago, you need a hickory sledge handle, a drill, hole saw, a 3/4 inch piece of sch 40 pipe and 2 pony clamps. Drill the hole at the thickest part of the handle where the sledge head usually sits. Slip in the pipe, fix it with some epoxy or whatever and you have a loadable sledge handle. I had most of these things at work so for me it was much cheaper than buying a sledge. Quote
Jared Goguen Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 Yeah at least here I can buy a 8-10lb wood handled sledge for less then $20. Quote My YouTube channel - grip, and shop projects.
Justin Matney Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 If you have a Harbor Freight near you, buy some sledgehammers there. Yeah they're cheap, and you get what you pay for, but if you're just gonna do levering and not actually hit anything with them, it won't matter. 1 Quote
