Norden
I found a couple phonebooks and thought I'd try this feat after watching daniel reinards tutorial. I was surprised about how easy it was. Is it supposed to be this easy or am I cheating? This book is about 1 inch. Maybe its way harder to tear a 2 inch book? http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lMfXFfxAY2k
Frank Pizzo
Nice job, I haven't ripped a crap ton of phone books but your technique looked like a standard grip-and-rip to me. No cheating that I'm aware of. However, that phone book is fairly thin compared to what I think most people shoot for in terms of a rip, but try some thicker ones and you just might tear through those pretty easily as well...it sure didn't look like you were struggling! Also, if you want to challenge yourself another way, try one that is a similar thickness but smaller in terms of dimensions...they get tougher as they get smaller.
Six Barrel Shotgun
Where can I find phonebooks ? Norden you know where to get lots of phonebooks in Sweden ? Nice job with that tear, looked easy. Do I remember correctly that Jedd has made a e-book or possibly DVD regarding phonebook tearing (and more I guess since its a small subject) ? EDIT:Found it: http://www.thegripauthority.com/phone-book-tearing.htm Edited April 25, 2015 by Six Barrel Shotgun

From what daniel reinard said in his video, I understand my technique to be a correct grip-and-rip one. I'm just so surprised how easy it was. Kind of like tearing 10 cards. I'll try a thicker book for sure. This was fun.

king crusher
Any method where you pinch the pages/crease them makes it a million times easier then a true phone book tear. I've torn a few 2" sized ones without any method. I use a thumbless grip on both hands on the open pages, squeeze and start applying force. Full hand and wrist workout. Brutal back and fourth. David_wigren
Yep that's the considered "legit" way of tearing a phone book. Personally I find this method easier than the supposed cheat way to do it by pressing the pages together to form a "V". I think the supposed "cheat method" is just an excuse or a cop-out some of the old timers would use to defend themselves in case anyone in the audience would mention an uncle tearing phone books.Oh, so your uncle is just as strong as me huh? Well that can't be because I'm doing it the "legit" way and your uncle is probably cheating! Or something like that.

Anyways, both daniel reinard and paul knight says in their videos that all pages are supposed to tear at once. I tried to do it slow and for me it tears from the bottom up. That's kind of why I got suspicious about if I actually did it the right way or if I cheated in some way. I suppose its kind of like with cards though. I could probably rip half a deck in 1 sec, while a full deck takes me about a minute. I will try a thicker book and see what happens. I think it will get much tougher for me. Or is even a 2 inch book considered an easy feat of strength?
Tim71
If you have a supply of thinner phonebooks you can get multiple tears vertically and all sorts of stuff like that. I've quartered them and then got multiple vertical tears out of the quarter. I'm like David in that I've done the "legit" way so much that the easier way to do it now takes me much longer. Phonebooks also vary from year to year with the difficulty of the paper. Nice job on that tear.
jasonotto
Nothing wrong with that tear. Well done.

You seem to have done this quite alot. Do you know anything about what I wrote to David. About tearing all pages at once. Do you feel like all pages rip at the same time when you tear? Nothing wrong with that tear. Well done. Thank you. Edited April 26, 2015 by Norden
odin
That tear looked good to me. Try stacking two of them together and tearing them while you are looking for a thicker book.
Norden
That tear looked good to me. Try stacking two of them together and tearing them while you are looking for a thicker book. I tried that and it was kind of hard, maybe harder than tearing a single book of the same thickness because of 4 cover pages instead of 2 and because you need to pinch the books together? The cover pages are kind of slick. Not much friction between the books.

That has been my experience too; you have to pinch harder to keep the books from sliding than you would have to pinch a single two-inch book.
