Coc #3 Near Miss @ 149

I appreciate everyone who chimed in on my skin toughness thread. I definitely bought two bottles of "Corn Huskers," and that stuff is awesome!

So I got my COC grippers back from Cannon today and the first thing I did was pull out my COC #3 and check the rating. I did this because in a different thread, I posted that I closed my 148 GM out of the package, and was almost certain my COC #3 was a monster because I couldn't even move the thing.

When I got it out, I saw the tag said 149, and I was dumbfounded. Then, I smelled the oil on the spring and remembered that after I have had my GM for over a week and a half, I can't seem to move it either. So I had an idea of sorts.

I put it in my hand and almost closed it one time, and almost closed it with my left. Then I did several cheat closes (where I leave my setting thumb on the dog leg to add some pressure there). Then I thought "I'm an Idiot!!!!! I should totally be getting this on Camera!"

So I set up with some chalk, and did the video, but I didn't manage to close it on the video. I am however, extremely happy that you can see how close I was after I had worn my hand out.

That being said, what difference does the oil really make on the spring resistance? I really didn't think it could be night and day like that. . .

But anyway, here's the video:

I just played with my GM and was able to do some cheat closes, so I guess another option is adrenaline. . .

Very close! If you hand't moved towards the camera after the set you'd of had it for sure.

I've found that putting oil does make things go smoother at times but I don't use it a lot, only when I take the time to clean my grippers I'm working with.

You are right there, give it a some time and you will smash that gripper. As a suggestion to help you with the close, work on your gripper setting with a gripper that's harder (an Elite if you have one; just something that is harder than a #3) and just attempt to set it down as much as you can, don't worry about closing the gripper when working the set. Work the ring and pinkie fingers, this can be done with a pony clamp or pinching plates; getting those two fingers stronger will make closing a gripper easy for you.

Awesome attempt, dude. In my limited experience, one day you could be 3mm off, the next day 10mm, the next day it slams shut without a problem.

Keep up the power, bro.

I like this idea, I usually avoid 20mm block sets because I have a hard time keeping the sets tight. It makes sense to practice the sets, obviously.

Great attempt dude. You held the set for a while and that drains power. If you jumped on the close faster you would have gotten it. Trying setting the gripper closer to the camera so you don't have to bring the gripper closer.

That was a very good attempt! You set that very wide, you will be able to close that easily if you deep set that or maybe just abit wider!

Strong attempt, next time that's yours.

The set was only like 1 sec, I would take that long to bring a credit card down anyway. Well your really close and it's right around the corner. How is the heavy partial squats going?

Thanks Guys! I appreciate you all taking a look!

I actually do do that sometimes, and I work the chest crush with harder grippers too :) I have also trained the poop out of my ring and pinkie fingers. I have the entire line of imtugs, and I think my best might have been a five I know, but I think I might even have closed a six one time. I know I did it with my index and middle fingers. I have also tried the 2 finger pinch and I really didn't like it at the time, but that doesn't mean I can't try it again :)

Another thing that has helped is upside down closes with a 2.5 @ 128. Something about that pushed me a great deal closer to closing my 3. My thought is: If I had something between 128 and 148, it might make this process a little more streamlined. . . but I guess I just have to work with what I got.

Thanks Chez! I totally did that because I wanted to show the set because I am trying to practice just In case I get good enough to cert the MM0. But next time I will try to find a way to be closer to the camera, and make the set shorter in duration.

Thanks man! I did set that gripper like I had it though--To Chez's point, most people don't hold a set for one second unless they know they got that %&*$ gripper. (PS. because grippers and decks of cards have been the hardest things for me to master, I openly cuss them).

I totally beat up all of my connective tissue doing partials; So I actually switched things up a lot. I was introduced to this thing called "gua sha" and have actually been able to use it to really loosen everything up. I still think partials are useful, and I will definitely get back into them, but it will probably be in a more limited scope (interspersed with full range of motion lifts, nerve flossing, and "gua sha")--like what I am doing for my radial/ulnar deviators right now (offloaded one-hand deadlift interspersed with levers for warm-up and/or cool-down to increase blood-flow and reduce tension).

I am currently working on DO deadlifts/rack pulls and I can currently get 405 from the floor. I also got back into full squating, and just started doing a lower partial than what I was doing (I have the hammersmith pin two slots lower).

It can make a huge difference which is why CPW oils and cleans all springs prior to rating and also puts on the reps. I've seen a gripper drop ~15 pounds from the rating just with the application of some oil.

Another story from way back when: My friend Luke (lukeamdman) was having a devil of a time closing his #3 for the first time. He just couldn't get it shut, but it never occurred to him to oil the spring. We finally met up one time at my house and he tried my #3 which was oiled. HE REPPED IT. It can make a huge difference.

Great attempt on that #3. That will be a PR very soon!
