steve0
I guy I know got this old Tetting gripper and unknown grip machine from his father in law. His father in law got the gripper and machine from a man named Art Gay, who appears to be an interesting man. Does anyone know anything about the machine. I know he Tetting gripper is one of the earlier ones. Also, before anyone asks, these are NOT for sale.
John McCarter
Interesting find, wish I could help you out. Richard Sorin or David Horne might be able to help.
steve0
The gripper was tough but I was still available to close it. Somone pointed out that those machines were being advertised in 1960s ironman magazines.
David Horne
Steve, I've answered your question on the Iron History forum.
1stCoC
I saw quite a long time ago an add for a similar machine for sale. It seemed Far ahead of its time in design and finish.Somehow I recall in the name or cast on the machine there was something about an atom or lightning bolt. Just saw the add once. Very, very nice! David Horne
Richard, Check Gripopaedia Vol 5 for a pic and all the info.
Samkem
I just talked to my father in law and originally the grip machine was grey with a red lightning bolt on it. I just joined the Gripboard. Steve was kind enough to post the pics of the equipment for me before I had known where grip enthusiasts would appreciate and could provide information. Thank you Mr Horne for the input, you made my father in law very happy. I just purchased Gripopedia Volume 5. Do you know if in that volume there is any information on the black Warren Tetting gripper with the clamp in the middle, as I have not seen any of his grippers with that before? After I told him the information about the device and that others find interest in equipment like this - he told me he also has another grip device he has had under the seat of his car for the past 40 years. Ill post if it proves interesting.
1stCoC
How is that for memory! The look of that gripper stuck in my mind!
Samkem
Just reviewed David Hornes Gripopaedia Volume 5, excellent information. Found the Johnson Grip Machine page 49 with original advertisement and lightning bolt right in the middle. Also found info pertaining to the Black Warren Tetting gripper, appears my father in law maybe is a little off on the date of 1952 as Tetting grippers listed as first sold in 1964. Cant fault him as he was 3 times Ex golden gloves boxer in his day. Noted was the middle clamp which is known as a "Keeper" which this one has. Anyone know why this one has a keeper and others do not?

Anyone know why this one has a keeper and others do not? More than likely the "Keeper" behaves like a choker. Without it the gripper legs would most likely be to wide to grasp. That spring looks to be 180 degrees between the legs without the Keeper. Well maybe down to a 160 degree spread Edited December 8, 2013 by zcor
1stCoC
The keeper seems to be on all the grippers I examined that were used by Paul Anderson and Terry Todd. They were at their peak in the 60s so I guess that keeper might have been used from the start of production.
Samkem
This is the device my father in law had under his car seat for the past 40 years. Just looked it up in the Gripopedia- Daniel Marvosh Super Gripper. Says he bought it in the 1960s along with the Tetting Gripper.
