The Set

I consider myself extremely weak at setting the gripper, compared to closing it.

I have closed a MM2 replica, but I often struggle setting a 2.5 to parallel without wasting lots of energy before the actual close.

I have watched paul knights setting video a hundred times etc etc, so that's not the case.

What I would like is some good advice on how to get real strong and confident at this movement.

The only things I do is setting the grippers I close in training, obviously, and apart from that I'm trying to get strong allover like most people here. So, does anyone have some good advice on anything else I can do to get a stronger set?

I would say practice setting grippers you can't close, like 3 or 4 times, then drop down to a gripper you can close for working sets.

Get stronger chest and tris. I really struggle with this as well. I can't set a #2 to parallel just by pushing. I have to get the gripping hand involved and pull as well.

Sounds like a good way to get stronger at it. Thanks.

The vulcan gripper is also a fantastic tool to help with your setting power and a good gripper to have I feel in general.

Yeah, I'm trying to get strong at bench cause it feels like it should help quite alot. Sadly I'm really weak at bench as well. :/

I believe I can set the #2 only by pushing, but that's about it. I have seen you close a MM2 replica too, Matt. I really don't like to feel nervous before a max close or near to max close only because I have no idea how the set is gonna turn out. I would like my set to looks like paul knights. Smoooth effortless-looking paused sets. :)

You're not the only one saying that, which probably means it's a good thing. It's just that I have always thought of the vulcan thing as an expensive big thing that I would never really use. :/

Try practicing just the pinching part of the motion at the end of your workouts with a gripper you cant close and the strength will come. I'm having the same issue right now.

I have done that for quite a while, but things seem to happen extremely slowly. Kind of the same thing as with thumb pad size. :) I really don't want to seem like someone who wants everything to happen fast though. Setting a gripper is a really weird and awkward movement. Quite different from bicep curls and leg presses (I do NOT do these exercises). :)

I was going to mention the Vulcan as well - and I don't know why you wouldn't use it. It's an amazing piece of equipment.

Well, I mean, why use this thing instead of regular tsg's? Just curious, cause I have never tried one.

Guest Squat More

Because it's smoother than TSGs, harder to set because of spread and the smooth handles, adjustable, you can train both hands without the extra pressure on the wrist and the issue of a different feeling of pulling against the spring like coiled TSGs cause, its smooth handles also allow for more volume training in either reps or harder singles because you don't have knurling beating your palms up. All of these things translate well to TSGs.

If you train with a Vulcan and TSGs and can close a Vulcan at level "X" with the tougher set, wider spread and smooth handles, closing a gripper at level "Y" is going to feel a lot easier - except on the last few MM of the crush, but that is why you don't ONLY train on a Vulcan to reach TSG goals.

I am sure there are quite a few guys here who would agree with that statement.

It is so freaking weird. My max gripper is 161 lbs bb elite. Thats my PR, but I can set my 214 lbs coc4 to closed and hold it there in the set.

Funny how ppl are strong at different parts.

You're not supposed to pinch it closed :) the thumb on the setting hand is just holding the gripper handle down in the closing hands palm and your index finger on your setting hand is pushing the handle down.

You push with your whole arm and your finger is just the part contacting the gripperhandle :) Understand? I never pinch.

Deep breath, tense up in your whole upper body and then crush down sorta like you would when doing the crush in bending. :)

I bring the gripper in close to my chest and push in like a crush in bending

Instead of pulling in, I involve the chest and back power.

Dumbell flys are good and dumbell benchpress.

I found that the more I practised setting grippers, the easier it became

Yeah, you're 17 and already smarter than me. :) I honestly don't know why I'm writing here instead of just practicing.
