Pryme
So I have been trying this once in awhile and have got well under 1/4in but have not quite closed it without usong the pinky. Anyone train with less than all four fingers for fun? And do you think it helps in closing your goal gripper? 3.5 in my case. I failed to mention this is with a #3 working towards a 3.5 using four fingers.
Randall Strossen
So I have been trying this once in awhile and have got well under 1/4in but have not quite closed it without usong the pinky. Anyone train with less than all four fingers for fun? And do you think it helps in closing your goal gripper? 3.5 in my case. I failed to mention this is with a #3 working towards a 3.5 using four fingers. I think it can be good to train along these lines and that's why IronMind developed the IMTUGs—your fingers differ in length and strength, so when you train them as one unit, chances are good that you are not tapping out all of them to their max. IMTUGs were specifically designed so that you could train your fingers one or two at a time. Magnus Samuelsson (the last man to certify on the Captains of Crush No. 4 gripper) pretty much drops his pinky off the bottom of the handle of his CoC grippers—sure, you are giving up some pinky power, but that might be a good tradeoff for at least some people because your stronger fingers move into a position with better leverage. Anything that increases the crushing strength/power of any of your fingers will help your goal gripper become your new work-set gripper, so if you are making progress with this method, I'd say stick with it. Good luck with the CoC No. 3.5—Mike Corlett has predicted two more certifications on the Captains of Crush No. 3.5 this year and I hope you are one of them! http://ironmind-forum.com/showthread.php?13-The-Captains-of-Crush-4-Gripper/page28
Mephistopholes
I have done two finger closes in the past with lower Grippers (paired as 1st 2 fingers and last 2 fingers) and found that to be helpful as a sort of assistance move. Even better was doing that with silver bullet holds.
Pryme
For me this new goal is harder than ccs with my #3. I can ccs it at least half the time if not about 60% of the time. So far cant quite get it three fingers but feel soon I will. Its the awkwardness of trying to set it I think. Its all a part of the fun though. So far cant quite get it three fingers but feel soon I will. Its the awkwardness of trying to set it I think. Its all a part of the fun though. I think it's a fun thing to mess with sometimes. I used to do 3 finger (dropping the pinky off) TNS #3 closes as a finisher in my gripper training. Never got more than a few reps. Years earlier, I did 3 finger inverted gripper closes (index finger off the handle) as part of a challenge here on the GB. Can't remember the details right now, but I think closing the #2 in the inverted fashion described was called "flogging" it. Maybe it was Darco that started it. Would have to look again. It was fun. But I got much stronger when I began doing deep set closes. And that is much stronger in ALL ranges. No sets to deep sets. But as far as do I think it will help you cert on the #3.5. I'd say no. It might not hinder you. But if it's not actively helping you, it's taking recovery ability away from training that could be spent actually getting strong enough to cert on the #3.5. That's how you ought to look at it. But that's just my opinion. And I'm not certified on the #3.5, so take this with a grain of salt, of course. Chez
I have messed around closing grippers with different finger combination. Here is a video of me closing a COC Trainer with just my pinky finger a while back for a challenge on the board: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SApMhOHFcdk I'm actually a lot stronger now but I haven't tried it since to see what I could do now. They are fun ways to make training interesting but I don't see carry over to regular gripper closes. Like Ben said, the best way to get strong on grippers to increase your MMS close and that will trickle down to wider sets as well.
