bubba29
I have only been watching this stuff closely for about 1 and a half years. I feel like in that time period grip sport has gained popularity around the world. Am I right? Am I wrong? Is there just ups and downs? Are we just on an uptick? Or is not getting any more popular? I'd be interested in the opinion of people who've followed this stuff for a long time. Quote Goals: CoC#2 (done 2-11-12) GHP 5 (done 2-27-12) CoC 2.5 (done 4-26-12) GHP 6 MM0 Rolling Thunder 160 lbs. The Mac
I'd say it is getting more popular over the long term, yes - with short term up-and-downs like everything else. 1 Quote Chris McCarthy
Jedd Johnson
I'd say it definitely is. I'd say we are on the cusp of an explosion. In case you haven't seen, there have been no fewer than 2 lengthy write-ups about Grip Sport in the last month on EliteFTS.com, which is a HUGE site visited by millions a year. I shared it on Facebook. I don't have a link right off... 1 Quote The GOLD STANDARD Feat in Plate Pinching: 2x45s Pinch Get Your Copy Here: How to Pinch 2x45s Ebook Diesel Crew Store: http://www.dieselcrew.com/store/shop

speedy
Hey Bubba, It really depends on how you look at it. I been into gripping since I was in single digits ever since I found a pair of plastic handle grippers at my mom's work place: same day she bought me a pair. Was hooked ever since. Since then and throughout the years I been taking fitness and strength more serious which resulted in a lot of research and forums. Based on history, short of the "Over the Top" mainstreem aspect, I think it never took off past Strong Man competitions and even that isn't as mainstream as other stuff out there. No, popularity, I just think we notice it more because we enjoy it; but especially since Over the Top movie didn't really bring arm wrestling to the map: well it did for a short while, I don't see it ever truly happening. However, I do see the tools that intrigue us more and more in common stores like Dick's Sporting goods. Jedd Johnson
That kind of thinking is what has held the sport back for years. 1 Quote The GOLD STANDARD Feat in Plate Pinching: 2x45s Pinch Get Your Copy Here: How to Pinch 2x45s Ebook Diesel Crew Store: http://www.dieselcrew.com/store/shop
Josh O'Dell
No popularity?? And how many members does this site alone have? Closing the coc 3 felt better than any lift i have ever done.
speedy
That kind of thinking is what has held the sport back for years. Hey man I am just being realisitc. I see people argue the other side by using the amount of members on this board as proof it's gaining popularity but someone can use the same argument when you compare it to something like football games and how many are into that and we don't even come close to that. It's all relative. I honestly don't mind it being what it is today; it's my thing as well as yours, and because of that we aren't pointed out to be trying to be mainstream like how tattoos have become due to tattoo shows. In the end to each is own; but again I am fine with where it's at. Stephen Ruby
I think and hope so The one contest i went too had a large turnout with a variety of athletes of different weights and ages as well as a female turnout I also have noticed a lot of international support for arm leagues like in Russia where grip sport has grown in popularity plus at every big expo you seem to have bigger grip contests each year.-even earning a local spot in the news for the last mighty mitts- Honestly it will never be as popular as a big sport but I think it can be close to as popular as arm wrestling or maybe even powerlifting which would be fantastic. Given how new the sport really is with regards to big contests not just a local contest at a guys house it seems to get bigger every year. You have to remember that other sports have been around for a very long time or are heavily tied to culture so they will always have a large advantage. As more people see the benefit of having strong hands not just in athletics but in everyday activities the sport will grow. I also commend those who have put in the work to help the sport grow we all know who they are and I appreciate it greatly. bwwm
If I compare it to something like the kettlebell 'explosion', the growth of grip seems more sustainable to me. A lot of people have gripped a gripper in their youth, and it has a nostalgic draw of sorts. The contests seem more grass-roots competition driven as opposed to marketing driven. Also, a lot of different strength disciplines overlap into grip - powerlifting, arm wrestling, bending, strongman, to name a few. There will be a Grip Sport article in the Wall Street Journal tomorrow. This could be HUGE for the sport! Do you know if a subscription is required? Will it be in the online and/or print edition? Thanks for giving us the heads-up on this Jedd! Quote Martin
Mike Sharkey
arm leagues like in Russia where grip sport has grown in popularity ^^^ THIS. Look at Ivan B. speedy
I do wish arm wrestling got more ESPN time for I actually enjoy that a great deal. Who knows, where it could lead. Maybe they need to remake "Over the Top". Curious about all this talk on the Wall Street journal; probably the only time I want to get one. :-D Quote I will be here on and off; if you really need to reach me you can find me on rosstraining.com/forum under the same handle: speedy
Paul Savage
Oh absolutely. It's a ton more popular than it was several years ago when i first got into it. Every time i pick up muscle and fitness magazine grip strength / exercises are always mentioned now and often more than once. Were beginning to see how grip training can enhance performance in other sports now (mma, crossfit, arm wrestling etc) and well just search captains of crush grippers or fat gripz on youtube - the videos are almost endless. Good point. Before the Internet became what it is today, I learned of COC's by an article in Maxim magazine. I was using plastic handle ones till I read that article and haven't looked back. Bill Piche
It has had steady growth and I use these forums as a data point in making that statement. There are more people actively promoting grip and this fact coupled with the growth of the Internet it has grown for sure.
paul valpreda
Yesterday morning I was SHOCKED to hear a story on the Wall Street Journal Report radio program about the North American Grip Championships competition! I thought it was great that "grip" got major network exposure and I hope it gets more. They did a solid, respectable job with the story and I was glad that they didn't make it out to be a freak competition like the media sometimes does with stories like these. Hopefully, there's more to come...
