Mephistopholes
So next Friday I'm going to start doing some deadlifts with the eagle loops to get my fingers working harder... What in debating over, however, is whether to use two fingers with each hand (the middle and index) or to use all fingers. Either way, it'll be a two handed lift, stressing the fingers. Anybody have thoughts on this?
hellswindstaff
If you're doing really heavy partial work in this manner; using all fingers would be more demanding on your CNS bc of the heavier weight, but less than all fingers would be less demanding but you would still get in good work for your fingers. What it really boils down to though is your goals. What specific change in your physiology are you trying to create?
Mephistopholes
Claw fingers. Haha I'm thinking the 2 finger lift might be more appropriate for me though. I'm thinking it'll help with tennis ball tearing, as well as grippers. And probably hubbing too.
slazbob
You should check out Chris James doing a 280kg four finger dead lift. He put it up on ironminds forum.
Mephistopholes
Just checked it out. That's pretty awesome. Haha
Mephistopholes
So I guess the next question is... With two finger deadlifts: using eagle loops, or just a barbell?
daniel reinard
Claw fingers. Haha I'm thinking the 2 finger lift might be more appropriate for me though. I'm thinking it'll help with tennis ball tearing, as well as grippers. And probably hubbing too. If you do 2 finger lifts make sure to train the ring finger too. The middle and ring finger are actually stronger based on leverages in the hand and forearm but we use them less so the index makes up the difference with muscle. I don't recommend doing ring/pinky though. It's more of an advanced training method. And I'd also mix in whole hand lifts too. After all we use the whole hand to perform most things. Targeting individual fingers should just be a way to hit weak links. Just my $.02. Edit: I should add I've done alot of hangboard work that is basically an eagle loop lift via a pullup. Climbers also like the eagle loops because of the options for isolation it offers. Just be sure to be careful, train everything, and then train it all together. Mephistopholes
I used to do 1 finger lifts with a turnbuckle I padded with athletic tape... I'd do all four fingers on each hand, one at a time, and it took forever. Haha. I'll have to mess around with it a bit and find a good way to hit em all. Mephistopholes
Also, Daniel, just saw your edit there... I've done pullups with the loops, but I just don't think that's the best way for me to use these... Primarily because they really screw me up in doing pullups. Haha. I can never seem to get them at the same width... I'll probably switch around with 2 finger and 4 finger lifts... Maybe do the 4 finger lifts as a 1 handed thing. Mephistopholes
Oooooh I just got a good idea. 2 fingers for the lift, 4 fingers for farmers walks. Or vice versa.
Mephistopholes
Here's a good article I found on the subject... http://ditillo2.blogspot.com/2009/04/goerners-deadlift-variations-brooks.html?m=
daniel reinard
Wicked training but one is to wonder about the real numbers he actually lifted. The figure that stands out the most is "7.) Two hands deadlift, normal overhand grip, no hooking. Goerner could pull 727½ in this fashion." Just a thought on his figures. Looks like intense training regardless. Would be interested to see someone have a go at it for 6 months to see what happens.
Mephistopholes
Yeah they may be a bit exaggerated. Haha. That kind if goes for all the old timers though. But it's really the spirit of it, and ideas behind it, that I think are important.
1stCoC
Was the James lift on an Olympic barbell with two fingers( no thumb) on each hand with reversed grips? I can not seem to find additional info on this . That is a huge lift if it is ...right at Gorners 595. Tell him to try the same on a 2" bar as well. Great lifting! Mephistopholes
So... Has anybody done this on an axle? What are your thoughts on it? What sort or results did you see? I'm thinking it may be safer for the fingers that way, because of how the pressure is distributed...
Electron
I find it very difficult to select fingers on an axle, all my fingers start coming into play.
