At the Arnold, not only did he stick his hand in the trap, but the trap was attached to the engine block and he lifted the engine block off the ground!!!

I wonder if he trained for this, or was just one day like "Screw it... I can stick my fingers in a bear trap."

haha, yeah. that's one of those things where you really wonder how they discovered they could do it in the first place.

Correction: Mountain Lion Trap, not Bear Trap :) I suspect Pat will not be working his way up to a Bear Trap! The Bear Trap would probably be the equivalent of a Number 5 Gripper!

Probably got his fingers slammed in a car door one day and said to himself "hey, that wasn't that bad!"

I saw a video of him Doing this for a radio show (?) and he said a little bit about how he started with much smaller traps. I wouldn't be surprised if he started as small as mouse traps, even those things sting pretty good... I used to get my fingers caught in them all the time when I was a kid because I liked to play with them. Haha

I caught the show late last night, I noticed that he host really didn't seem all that impressed with the other feats of strength for the most part but as he said something along the lines of what makes you different than other strongmen "Sticking your hand in a trap". This is probably not nearly the hardest thing Pat does in his shows but it seems the most shocking which in turn eventually got him on national TV. I saw that his hand bone density seemed well above average and a direct factor in how he can perform this feat without shattering bone "Genetics can help or hurt you-Fact!" I wonder if it is just luck so to speak or was he able to enhance this with training in some way?

I know I talked with an Iron Palm master when I first got into grip years ago and he swore that by repeatedly striking his hand on hard objects and using certain herb concoctions he changed his own bone density in his hands and for a good price he would teach me everything I ever wanted to know about his methods. I was very curious but the guy seemed very odd (he even ranted about how he was having a hard time getting his medical marijuana even though he had a legal card-strange to talk about that with a stranger but I have always be a magnet for crazy!) and I didn't need to deaden my hand nerves seeings how I needed to still feel pulses and the like as a medic.

Now Pat and Dennis have been on the Stan Lee Super Humans show - Who's next?

Probably that Russian guy who can both bend and drive nails barehanded.

I would think that Pat's years of bending nails and steel bars along with horse shoes in very minimal padding have helped with the toughness of his hands and the density of his phalanges.

Iron hand is the same in some sense to smart strength training, you start at a low level volume and intensity... build volume, then increase intensity. During training you should never feel sharp pains and should, in this training particularly, use submaximal intensity. Intensity is measure by the force put into the strike and/or the materials which are being struck. Though the herbal concoction is recommended, lest you want some pretty knarly callouses all over your hand, though it's main purpose is to speed recovery.

Pat is the real deal. The dent that was left deep across his hand when he did the lion trap/ engine block feat at the AOBS really caught my attention. I examined his hand and the pressure ridge was really deep. Is this a pure feat of toughness or is skill or any equipment modification or selection used to make the stunt survivable? I have a Conibear wolf killer trap that I can put out on loan for further experiment.lol

I noticed in the show that the host supposedly went to a local store and purchased a new trap for Pat to perform his feat on so there was no speculation of equipment manipulation...I believe his feat was legit...I believe that others could perform this feat but most are to scared to take the plunge - That first step is a doosey-lol If you don't do it just right and your hand is not developed well enough to handle the pressure - You have a broken hand in a flash! My Uncle gave me a few traps of different varieties as a kid and I used them to trap raccoon and possum but the one that was the largest would snap sturdy sticks with no problem, granted a stick doesn't give and compress like tissue and tendons of a hand but I wouldn't have stuck my hand in that one, I did do the hand thing a couple times on a dare with the smallest trap but it wasn't anything special.

It is still a cool feat of strength and I am sure with the national airing of the show we will soon see a few more videos on the net of others that will try it...
