Blob Curl For Reps...

Matt Brouse

Recommended Posts

Did it once back in like 2005. Got RIDICULOUS tendonitis a few days later after accomplishing it and have never tried hard since. It is a feat I have blocked from memory that tendonitis hurt so bad.

I will try it tomorrow though.

The guy who did it the easiest that I recall, I think, was Maidenfan.

I think I saw video of John Eaton doing it as well but I may be wrong.

I've seen Adam do plate curls with 7 different 45#s in a video.

I'm not sure if he's done a blob curl but he may be a likely candidate.

Trying to figure this out... Is it the pressure on the wrist that makes this so hard? (I mean, obviously the thumb strength is a feat in itself, but if you're trying to curl a blob I'm assuming that at that point, gripping it isn't too big a deal for you.... And 50lbs isn't a hard curl)

Do you guys think one day a man will come who HAMMER curls a blob? ;)

I can't even imagine this feat!

This would be truly Super Human!!!

50lbs on one hand is a pretty tough curl IMO. I can imagine it's tough to fire your biceps enough while enduring such pressure on grip.

I never did have a very good curl though.

...always remember the number one rule - curls get the girls :|

Yes, there is some pain tolerance involved, but also the leverage aspect of the Blob jutting out of your open hand.

I don't think this is impossible at all. I remember Rob Vigeant holding a Blob up to his face like he was taking a bite out of a cheeseburger. I came close to this in 2004/05 when i was more focused on feats than grip contests.

I think the hammer curl would take some dedicated training on a regular basis, for sure.

Jedd, would you consider something smaller than a blob (widthways) but of the same weight... still a good feat? I feel like my hand size would prevent me from lifting the blob. Obviously, the weight would have to be longer than the blob to have the same mass.

Like what? My 180-lb personal training client can do a set of 4 in Bicep Curls with Dumbbells. Is that what you mean?

Will try the hammer curls with our smaller blobs. Never thought to try this I guess.

Also need to try a concentration curl with the blob.

Forget concentration curls as they usually go looser than normal sway curls.

If there is going to be a curl of the Blob, let's make the challenge legit, so that we are not talking about a loose style curl - Curl it against the wall.

So how about a challenge to see who curls a 50lb Blob with their bum and back against the wall, and heels of your feet no further than 10" away from the wall. Now this would be something to see!!

One Hand 50lb Blob Curl against Wall
Rules
1. Use a proper York 50lb Blob.
2. Curl the 50lb Blob with one hand from hang to full curl.

3. Your upper back and bottom are to stay against the wall. Your heels of your feet can be 10" away from the wall, to take the strain off your back.
4. Post your youtube video link here.

I may post this on my forum too, in case there is someone who can do it.

David. I don't even see people doing that with a regular dumbell. Please make your challenge open to any size blob or hex to give the new guys a chance. How does that sound?

Parris,

It is easy with a dumbbell. I would rep 50lb, and I also use a lot more in training.

But yes a 50lb York Blob is a different animal!

I think you need to be large handed, with a strong wrist and mega curling
strength.
I had 3 attempts today, and it is not an easy task. After you pick the Blob up, then supinate it, and lean back against the wall, there just didn't feel a curl left there. But it was my first try at it. I videoed them, and will view the vids later.

I only have heavy Blobs, but what other sized Blobs do you suggest for the challenge?

I really like those rules.

I would also like to one day see a 45# plate curl done on exactly THIS manner. The best 45# curls I have seen on the internet are Adam Glass's curls, and although they are VERY impressive and deserve HUGE props, when I tried curling a plate in his style I found it to be MUCH easier than a "strict" curl. The plate goes past the sticking point too fast.

Whoever curls the blob or a 45# plate using the rules Mr. Horne has posted surely has my admiration!!

David.

I don't know if I could do it, I'm not much of a curler myself. As far as what other size blobs I guess any, 50lb blob beats a 40lb, you know like a runners up list. I only have 50lb blobs too, so I could give it a try. I just highly doubt it because I rarely if ever train bicepts, for me I feel they get enough doing the big muscle groups.

I also think I should clarify that the Blob should be lifted from the floor.

Once I have details back from Parris as to the sizes, then a page can be set up.

Parris,

Well we obviously armwrestle, so we have to do plenty of arm work too.

So 50lb, 47.5lb, 45lb, 42.5lb, 40lb, 37.5lb, 35lb, 32.5lb, 30lb.

Those sizes good?

That sounds perfect David, with 50lb being the goal it will give the guys something to shoot for. With the winners circle being the 50 lb and reps of it.

I would bet that Rob Vigeant could do this challenge for reps!!!

Rob doesn't frequent here any more but I may bring this up to him over on the NE Board!!!

Rob V. is an absolute animal when it comes to grip strength!!! One of my All-Time Favorites!!!

Here's a pic from my gallery of Rob in 2009 at the ROTN in Kansas City:

His hand absolutely dwarfs mine!!! He has some of the largest hands I've ever personally seen!!!

acromegaman (Delmar Carter) may even have Rob V. beat!!! GEEZ!!!
