It has come to our attention that there has been some canvassing for votes.
Although nothing was said that this was not allowed, we feel that it is not the right thing to do, and others are probably not doing this.
So after a lot of debating and our own voting on this subject last night the IGC have changed the member voting system.
Now the four members of the IGC vote for one of the candidates, and the fifth vote goes to the forum vote.
Now any of the four will do a perfect job I believe, but canvassing for votes was something that we didn’t envisage

This makes no sense to me at all. I would think the IGC should want the competitors to have the final say on who the board members will be. Under this scenario, the existing board members have complete control over who is going to get that final position. Why even bother putting it our for a vote if this is the way it's going to be handled?

Why would you change the voting instead of changing the panel of candidates?

Let this vote sort itself out (if there was no foul play) and for future elections make it clear that candidates must "sit tight" during voting or else be kicked off the panel and replaced with a fresh candidate.

I feel strongly the community should elect the members.

And, I don't quite follow the harm in campaigning for votes.

Just my own thoughts here.

The canvassing was done on Facebook and people were joining the forums just to vote. They may or may not have any interest in grip but were not already community members. Less than fair I would say.

So I can see why that is undesireable, but if no rules were broken, why not let this election resolve and set the expectation in the IGC rules for following elections? I don't follow the logic to pull the voting "in house".

If one looks at politics – when it is necessary that a member must be replaced – it is normal that that position to be appointed to fill the unexpired term until the next election period (which is a topic we shall also address soon). In this case we are in new territory (like with everything to do with this whole group). We took the information we had – discussed the issue and made a decision based on that information – everyone will not agree but we felt it the best choice we had all things considered – we are the ones who have to be able to work closely with the new member. We were all elected to make what “we think” are the best decisions for the sport – and we try very hard to do just that. Some of our decisions you may not agree with – some you will. But it is our decision to make – and it was not made lightly but after a lengthy discussion.

Good post, Chris, thank you for that.

I guess I wanted to voice my opinion even if the only result is that I'm part of the dialogue.

After reading Aaron's comments and also taking into account what Chris had to say, I now understand why this change had to be made. Hope I didn't offend anybody with what I said. Thank you to the IGC members for taking the sport so seriously.

I've been a politician (city councilman) for over 20 years now and I have learned that all we can do is what we think is our best in each situation.

Vote has finished on my forum. It has run exactly a week.

Poll ended at Sat Feb 02, 2013 3:04 pm

Eric Roussin (Canada)
6
22% Cesare "Chez" Ricchezza (USA)
1
4% Nuno Couto (Portugal)
15
56% Brent Barbe (USA)
5
19% Total votes : 27

So combining the scores the result is:

Eric Roussin (Canada) 6 + 9 = 15

Cesare "Chez" Ricchezza (USA) 1 + 16 = 17

Nuno Couto (Portugal) 15 + 12 = 27

Brent Barbe (USA) 5 + 19 = 24

So the forum winner is Nuno, congratulations.

Now the four IGC members will vote, and when we have these results, we will post them up.

Thanks!
