User99
What do you guys think about tearing regular 8 1/2 x 11 printer paper compared to a deck of cards? I've been able to take up to 5 sheets of paper, fold them 3 times so they resemble the size of a deck of cards and rip that. Will this cross over into being able to rip a deck of cards? Right now I'm shooting for 7 sheets of paper, folded 3 times would make 56 sheets thick. I know the thickness of the paper is not the same as a deck of cards, but tearing that fold (for me anyway) seems to be pretty tough. I read on an old post (2006 or 2008) that someone said "There's no substitute for ripping cards except ripping cards" but then there was a bit of discrepancy. Has anyone since then tried this kind of tearing out? I've 'popped' an 1 1/2" phone book before on my first try and it was pretty easy. I'd like to get up to grip'n'rip one of thoses things, or even the larger yellow pages. Any thoughts or advice would be great!
knyaz
to get used to tearing a deck you would need to start at 30 or more cards and work your way up, i m not sure to how the paper translates but ive heard John brookfield say that cartboard cut into deck size resembles the feel of ripping a deck of playing cards.. very similar, so maybe you can try that. but the best way to see where your at is to buy a few decks of cards and see the way I did it was start at about 30 and work my way up to a full deck, with chalk and without chalk
naturalstrength
If I am not mistaken, I have been told that taking a sheet of newspaper and folding it in half 8 times will give you a finished product similar to a deck of cards. Although it adds up quick financially speaking, the botton-line is in order to get really good at a particular strength feat one must train specifically for it. Unfortunately that means having to buy $4 decks of cards, $30 hammers, $8 horseshoes, $6 wrenches, $3 a piece steel bars, etc. It quickly becomes an expensive sport, but at least your left with manly hands at the end of it:laugh !!!! Shoggoth
I think you'll need cards to get better at cards. Sheets of paper and cardboard aren't wanting to slip around and malform like cards do and don't have the same sharp edge. Maybe you can but it wasn't the best way for me to progress. AP
Tearing paper is a good tool in itself, its easy to work and its nice and cheap. I've spent time tearing both newspaper and printer paper and would recommend it to build a good base of finger/hand strength. To get good at cards though you're going to have to do a lot of cards. User99
I appreciate all the responses. My pointer finger and thumbs are hurting from tearing paper the other day. That's a good sign if taking the motto "Pain is just weakness leaving the body" to heart.
