Malice
I just ordered the Joe Kinney Get a Grip dvd. I'm l ooking forward to watching it. Who here has it or has seen it and what do you think of it?
hiteck88
I have seen it. Just watching Kinney grinding the handles of the #4 is something worth seeing. In the interview he also give you an insight in his training, and how he got into grip training. i think its worth a look, but i dont think anybody but kinney could handle his program. That person must have a LOT of determination.
stevey7
I ordered it a while back, great dvd kinneys grinding of the #4 handles will never be matched the bloke was a freak for grip strength,I mean sticking your thumb througth a full beer can is a freak of nature. His workouts were crazy,I used some of his training for the negs high sets and all that and got really strong with the grippers, but negs all alone for me i come to a grinding halt quickly. The workouts are for joe himself because even a experienced gripster could not manage the volume and recovery rate the training dishes out. Dave2
I can not think of a more well round athlete in the Discipline of strength than Joe Kinney. Most, if not all, of his PR will never be matched by another human being. His staggering 60 full rep squats of 440lbs is one of celestial proportions. It was once said many years ago, Kinney would load 250lbs on an Rolling Thunder handle and hold it in a neutral wrist curl position. Applying the man has some of the most devasting wrists going around.
Cannon
Okay everyone... Please refer to THIS THREAD for many opinions on this topic, and also to see what kinds of things will get this thread locked too. No rants. Please only post information you understand to be true. If you can, go back to the video and even take notes about exactly what he said so you get it right. Thanks.

Cannon
I honestly love the topic of Joe Kinney and have had some incredibly rewarding conversations with a few over email. I stick to what I posted in the other thread: Personally, I took away priceless information about BTR training, what constitutes a quality negative, what mistakes he made that I can avoid, what necessitated the different equipment, why each piece is valuable, and how to train other muscles in your hand to build a better "tool" for closing grippers. Just to name a few things. It's clear that Kinney has spent a great deal of time thinking about training. After watching the first video, I did the same. Therefore, almost nothing in the new video was news to me. I had spent countless hours thinking forward and backward from his comments to try answer a bunch of WHY and HOW questions. The new video simply confirmed that I was correct in my assumptions. If you're watching the video for feats or water cooler chat, both videos are light on content. You're not going to take much away. If you watch for those answers to the WHY and HOW questions, you'll change something about how you train immediately. The new video is a shortcut to those answers. Everything you needed was in the first video.
Hubgeezer
I finally got it last week, and I watched some of the latest version, the interview with John Wood. I had the original VHS at one time. The video did not have my undivided attention, so I plan on watching it several times. A guy like me, who has been banging away for years, having been influenced to some degree by the original tape and his chapter in the IM book probably will REALLY get a lot out of it. I own a Kinney-made Secret Weapon. I never used it much because of the pain inflicted using it. Half-listening, I hear him almost speaking to me, something to the effect of "it was designed to be used for negatives, not full range movements", and he seemed to be saying in between the lines to me "you idiot, no wonder you don't like it, use it correctly and maybe it will do you some good". So, I need to go back, listen carefully, pay attention, as I think I lost some of the original points he was making. Another point, unlike many here, who have lots of different goals articulated as to wanting to lift this or that, bend this by that date, etc, he was OBSSESSED WITH GRIPPERS. He was working on very specific gripper closings, and did not have the sidebars that many of us get wrapped up in. He was hyper-focused, and believed strongly in himself. Joefrey
Nice post ! I really like the last paragraph with which I 100% agree !!
Dave2
I also remember reading an article on the internet about Kinney's first time experience walking into the gym. He describes the gym members, who did not squat or deadlift, as weaklings.
Malice
The dvd showed up last night and I just finished it. Pretty cool and informative. As for the weight he claimed to use, which seems to be a controversial point for a lot of people, I take it with a grain of salt. The exercises themselves however and the reasons behind them I found to be pretty interesting. Right now I don't have any grip machines and now am going to get a TTK and am seriously thinking about a Secret Weapon. All in all I like the video. Cannon
Consider a plate-loaded machine first. To me, in both the original video and the follow-up, he makes it clear that a majority of the work is done on the plate-loader. He peppered in the SW to fine tune his crush, but it was not the work horse.
