#3 Spread

I just got a new #3 and the spread after breaking it is a shade under 3 1/4" spread. My 2.5 is about 2 7/8" I emailed Ironmind to ask why the spread was so wide. I was told by Randall Strossen that the #3 is supposed to be a good bit wider than all the other grippers. I did not know that. I wanted to find out the spread on newer #3 grippers that others have got. I was told that all #3 grippers should be over 3" spread. I have small hands so I have a tuff time with wider grippers.

This, of course, means their legendary Q/C has flaws. Over 3" spreads are rare. I wonder what other benchmarks they are missing...? unsure.gif

Sounds like my #3, which has a spread about 3 1/4" wide from my measurement (same as my #4), plus the mounting is below flush on it, so it essentially feels more like an Elite than a Grand Master, the BB Gripper it's supposed to be equal to. My MM1 replica is actually easier than my #3 to close. I guess the new #3 grippers are supposed to be equal to the BB Elite now or something, except my #3 is from 2005, back when spreads that wide were less common.

Two of my #3's were purchased within the last year, and they're not even close to the level of a BB Elite. I really don't think you'll find too many #3's that can compare to an Elite.
