I say smart training, dedication, and pain tolerance. You need to push yourself, especially if you have less than favorable genetics. So in other words, be smart, stay on target, and don't be a panzy.....

Fart on genetics! Was it "genetics" that choose Kinney to close the #4? NO! It was his unshakable confindence and dogged determination! :yikes Also, how much pain are you willing to endure? I voted for determination, in case you were wondering.

Determined/detication/motivation/fire in the gut/etc... Without these, genes mean nothing. I have seen the most gifted genetically become a quivering mass when it got tough. I have also seen the guy with poor to average genetics dominate due to mental toughness.

Yes...but without good genes ( FOR STRENGTH ), "Determined/dedication/motivation/fire in the gut/etc..." don't mean a lot either if for example your intention is to close the #4 (Some will just never have the tendon resistance required to withstand the pressure, for one).

Offcourse, if you want to reach your full potential (and not set WRs) then Smart Training/Dedication/motivation/fire in the gut are all you need to achieve it. But, is this really an issue ?

Hard sensible training.

You can be extremely dedicated to training - but if you're not training effectively then all the dedication in the world won't get you as far as you could possibly go.

Good question ;)

Determination, dedication, proper training are very important but if you don't have proper genetics you can't reach WC ability.

Do you think that with dedication and proper training and without oustanding genetics a man will be able to clean and press the inch dumbell? Or toy with #3 like Heath? I think that dedication, determination and hard training are fundamental to achieve your highest grip ability but without proper genetics you can't achieve WC grip ability.
