Holy Crap

I was talking to "cberg" about this last night, yesterday my wrist was feeling a bit sore, it's been feeling that way for a while now but nothing serious, yesterday it started to feel worse, so bad that I couldn't even wrist curl a 20lb Dumbbell with it. Well today I could barely move my wrist around at all without pain. I plan on taking at least a week break from ANY kind of lifting what so ever, all stationary bike and elliptical machine for me.

What I wanted to know is if anyone knows of any general wrist healing techniques besides the rest I am going to give myself. Ice? Should I wrap it with a tensor or just leave it be? It's got to be my tendons, how should I work on rehabbing it? Would appreciate any advice you guys are willing to share.

Could be a pinched nerve. Where is the pain, and what type of pain is it (dull, sharp, etc)?

It's sharp and when I make a fist there is a small little bump like feeling under the skin that isn't in my right wrist, about half an inch away from the first crease of my wrist, thumb pad side where your pulse is usually checked.

Sounds like a ganglion cyst to me. Here's one I had for over a year:

http://www.gripboard.com/index.php?autocom...si&img=7337 Look anything like it?

It just finally went away a few weeks ago, actually. Didn't cause any pain for me (although, when I first got it, it did), but that's not always the case. Sometimes I'll get one on the top of my right wrist, and that'll make it pretty sore, much the same way you describe yours.

Mine isn't that big, you can *just* feel it under the skin, it's a soft bump and I've only pushed it down once (to see if it would hurt) and it did. I think it's either tendons or ligaments sore because I've been really givin'er in trying to close my #2 with my left hand. I think I'll just let it rest a week, ice it, wrap it, use my right hand as much as possible and once it gets to feeling better just do a LOT of wrist curling to strengthen my wrists, I feel like I need it anyhow. Maybe this is my body's way of telling me that if I'm going to keep training with grippers I need to strengthen my wrists a lot more.

sorry to hear its gotten worse bro, I wish I could help but i seriously know nothing about recovering from injuries, i never get any lol. after your injury heals, for wrist strength I would definitely do sledgehammer levering in all directions not sure if youre doing that currently. Thats mainly what I do, that and bending, and when I close a max gripper I dont feel anything in my wrist lol. I wish you a speedy recovery man and hopefully some people will chime in here with advice on how to speed up the healing process.

Sorry to hear about this injury Jonathan, the last thing you need after succeeding in closing your goal gripper :( I'm not sure if what you have is too complex/serious but i always find that i feel better after a contrast bath. The way i do it is to fill up a bucket/sink with cold water and then fill one up with nice hot water and then when i'm starting it i put ice cubes and ice packs etc into the cold one so it's more extreme. I'm not sure if this helps more than just regular cold water but that's what i do. I would mostly do 4min cold, 2min hot, 4min cold, 2min hot and then finish with another 4min cold.

Hope this helps you, get better!

Thanks guys, still no idea what's wrong but I think it could be a ganglion cyst like Frank showed me though just not that big yet, I really hope it's just some swelling in my wrist and will go away in a few days. I'll give myself a week from any weight training besides my 20 rep squats and just do cardio, see how it feels this time next week.

Peter, I've always done contrast baths after grip workouts and I gave my hands one yesterday with only small results in feeling any better. I think I just over trained, my mistake. Just time to get my wrists stronger.

I get these from time to time and they just end up going away. Depending on where they are, they can be quite irritating.

Do they cause your whole wrist to be sore John? I literally couldn't wrist curl a 20lb dumbbell the night before last and while I've never really trained my wrists themselves I could easily do 45-50lb dumbbells for wrist curls in the past. I have been doing a lot of training lately, pushing myself to see how far I could go. I guess it's time to slow down on everything. The bump is new in my wrist, the last 3 or so days but the soreness has been around for a while but only in my left hand. I still think it's the coil of my gripper springs to be honest with you, being a lefty I've always felt more pressure on my wrists closing my #2 than in my right and I'm left handed. Once my money transfers from my bank into paypal I'm sending RB the money for those two lefty coiled grippers to strengthen my wrists while I'm working on my crush.

Never the whole wrist, but definitely not feeling good. Once in a while on left hand gripper closes my hand cramps at the close which I attribute to the torquing of the spring. IMHO, I think your money would be better spent on other equipment. It's a right-handed gripper world, just adapt and overcome :D

I have kicked many an ass in competition by having my left equally as strong. I think i was the 2nd or 3rd ever to score over 7 on euro grippers. :tongue

I wouldn't recommend grippers coiled the other way - you're best of just using a lighter gripper and bringing the left up to speed.

As for the wrist issue i'd suggest using the powerball for rehab - i have rehabbed plenty of wrist injuries over the years with one. If you are worried about it, go see a doc. No amount of suggestions or posts is as good as medical advice.

Pfffft, if I "you know"ed on a regular basis I probably wouldn't have this problem :laugh

Well sam the problem I find is that my left SHOULD be stronger on grippers than my right because I am a left handed guy, everything else grip related is MUCH stronger in my left, for weight and endurance. It's just the coil spring in the grippers that cause me the trouble because of the pressure it puts on my left wrist that it doesn't with my right. Because I am planning a future career in law enforcement I want my dominant hand as strong as my non dominant hand in crushing grip and grip endurance. If left handed favoring coiled spring grippers will give me strength in my left hand equal to what "regular" grippers do for my right then I'll get them and save myself the wrist pain. I'm not looking to cert or enter competitions at all really. That could change in the future, who knows, but as of right now I just want equal strength in both hands.

The "lump" could very well be just an area of inflammed tissue that is putting pressure on the nerves in that location. the radial nerve is a big one right there that can cause you lots of pain. I would reccomend:

Rest, Ice, compression/elevation, and NSAIDs (aleve or ibuprophen) tylenol is not as good of an antiinflamatory as it is as an antipyretic (fever). Once the pain has improved I would try range of motion exercises while slowly adding weight...dont rush it.

Might actually be his median nerve as well.

Talked to a nurse friend of mine today, she checked out my wrist, asked me a bunch of questions and she said it comes down to simple tissue damage. The bump is inflamation and not a cyst or anything. She said to take it easy, take advil, and just ice it if it ever starts to really hurt. She also gave me shit for chewing :dry

Every time a doctor gives me crap for chewing i just say that I had to take up something to keep me occupied when I put down the crack pipe. That usually shuts them up. :laugh

HAHAHA!

I hurt my left wrist a few years back...it was a really rough road to recovery. I know not how I did it; but, I do know it hurt like hell. The only thing that helped was rest. When I saw my doctor she asked me if I did any repetitive movements that could have aggravated it. I told her about the crazy grip stuff I do and she just looked at me puzzled and said, "Why? Stop that...just stop doing that stuff." I laughed at her and left with my sore wrist and my dignity.
