Final Few Mm Of The #3

Recommended Posts

So last night i managed to get 9 reps with the #2.5 after only getting around 3-4 with it before, just wondering if it's worth buying something like a hose clamp to choke my gripper down to the last cm of the close or so just to strengthen up this part of the close? I've tried closing the #3 with both hands and then trying to hold it closed but it pops open so the handles are around 5mm apart :(

My friend, who holds the world under 18 82.5kg weight class deadlift (220kg),says i should just continue to rep the #2.5 and i will eventually get the #3 which is probably true but after reading some posts here it sounds like a choker could help me to close it quicker?

Any advice would be appreciated :D

Yes, a $0.99 choker is well worth it. Also, negatives performed just as you described are great. Do negs, 3 or 4 rep negs, 2 or 3 sets. Also do mini reps on the hardest gripper you can close, close your 2.5 and barely open the handles for each rep ( about 1/16 of and inch), try to beat your best number of minireps each workout, this help with the final part of the close tremendously. Good luck.

good advice ..... especially the mini reps, and start a log on how many mini reps you're doing each day so that you know what number to beat like Casey said. Alos try oiling your #3 w/3 and 1 oil (Lowe's or HD) you should be able to take it a little further w/some oil.

filing is good too like Matt said also ........... time to go buy some more grippers

if y oucan find a gripper inbetween your 2.5 and your 3, ideally that should be your gripper to be training on

Ok thanks for the advice!

hopefully going to a hardware warehouse tonight at some point to buy a hose (radiator?) clamp to choke my #3 but i think i might have to close it by hand to choke it since i cant manage to get it closed using a vice, just slips sideways every time :P

On a sidenote, who is the youngest #3 closer on the gripboard? would be cool to close it before my 17th birthday and even cooler if i was the youngest on the site :rock i have to apologise for how competitive i am tho but hopefully it'll get me more motivated :D

Derek Graybill got it at 15, I was repping it at 16, and Mike Sanderson who was the youngest certified CoC (14) was a member here as well

Wow, thats impressive sineparixmace!

Got a choker about 30 mins ago and have choked my #3 so that the handles are about 0.7cm apart and with great effort i am able to close it but it's tough :(

Should i just continue to close it set at this distance and gradually widen it?

Imo, you should start working with the #3 now. Do BFNs in the final 5-10mm range to strengthen that part of the close, and you should have it in no time. And, like Matt said, file your 2.5 and start working some BTR work. Also, train other aspects of grip...in particular, pinch. It's a great plateau blaster, and will give you more well-rounded functional hand strength.

Sorry for my grip-noobishness, what do BFNs and BTR stand for?

BTR = Beyond the range. When you file a gripper, you're working beyond the range of a normal close. It's great for strengthening the final few mm's of the close.

BFN = Bounce-forced negatives. Basically, doing negatives, except when the gripper opens up about 1cm (or wherever you choose) force it closed again...

repeat for as many reps as you want. This is my favorite strength builder.

Ah right ok thanks.

I think i'll have to leave the grippers for tonight, trying to hold a #3 closed and then using a screwdriver to tighten the choker at the same time is a good workout in itself :P
