Thumb/pinch Strength

Why does width (not at the extremes) affect pinch?

Leverage?

Muscle used?

Friction???

Just kinda wonderin' I didn't see anything about it, just that some were better with wide and some narrow, even between hands.

The easy answer is: Because.

Too wide is a problem; too thin is a problem; maximum pinch width potential is measured by measuring the base of the thumb to the base of the forefinger.
