chriselv Posted April 8, 2009 Posted April 8, 2009 I've been doing a new training routine the past few weeks. When I started training grip, I only used grippers. After spending some time on GripBoard and reading a few of John Brookfield's books I came to realize that doing only gripperwork is like doing only bench press for traning your entire body. I also realized that I have to train the extensor muscles, maybe not for strength, but for avoiding injuries and maintaining muscle balance. Grippers 5 sets for 2 reps on a gripper I can close for about 5 reps. 1-2 attempts on my goal gripper, crushing as far as I can then forcing it closed against my thigh. Rolling Thunder Max reps for 3 sets, usually around 7-10 reps. Pinch with IM hub Same routine as RT Wrist 2-3 sets with ~20 reps wrist curl 2-3 sets with "twisting" a EZ-barbell Now and then a few sets of reverse grip curls with EZ-barbell (usually included in my powerlifting workouts) I've done this routine 1-2 times per week. I never train unless I feel that my hands are ready to take another beating. About a month ago I was about 20mm (~0,8") from closing the IM #3. When I tried it yesterday, I almost closed it, only 1mm or so to go! The #3 shall fall this easter! I'm also working on a little Rolling Thunder project. I'm trying to make a 12 week RT routine by using a existing powerlifting routine created by a professional. I've had really good experience with this program in bench press and squats. I have absolutely no idea if this is going to be successful, but it's worth a try Quote

When I first manage to close the IM #2 consistently I was nowhere near of doing reps on it. I got a minor injury at that time and stopped doing gripperwork for almost two weeks. When I picked it up the first time after the break, I did 4 reps on it. I guess I had overtrained, and that my muscles could use the time to recover. It seems like I have some kind of "notchy" progression curve Quote
thewicked Posted April 8, 2009 Posted April 8, 2009 looks like a solid routine! keep us posted i'm curious to see how this works out with you! Quote
Grippster Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 I like how you do multiple sets of 2 reps with a gripper you can close 5 times. Doing this allows you to close the gripper twice as many times and it's probably more beneficial to do this than just do one set and max the reps out. Quote

I'm trying to train grippers like I train weights: not training to failure. I only do the two sets with a gripper I can't close now and then, not every workout. I know that forearms can be trained a lot harder than most other parts of your body, but I think that "excess energy" training may be beneficial in the long run That's how the powerlifting routine work, which I will try with Rolling Thunder when I get the time. chriselv Posted April 10, 2009 Author Posted April 10, 2009 I'm pretty satisfied with todays workout I got two new PR's. In a little over 5 months after my first COC #2 close and around 6 months after starting with grippers , I finally closed the #3 After the close I managed to get 6 reps on the #2.5. I filmed both closes, but I've unly uploaded the #3 close. It's very bad lighting and the camera had problems focusing, hopefully you'll see the number on the handle and that the gripper is closed Quote
Yersinia Posted April 11, 2009 Posted April 11, 2009 congrats! Quote Goals! : Dominate the #2.5 and BBSM Done!
