John Beatty Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Guys- Got an interesting suggestion from a potential spring supplier that I wanted to run by you guys. One supplier suggested instead of using a bunch of different wire sizes, using one wire size with different coil sizes. Like the middle strength I was going to use, then 2 bigger coil sizes, and 2 smaller coils. I don't know about it, but the guy says they can easily vary the strength considerably. any thoughts? BroodingMoon Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Wouldn't that affect the spread of the grippers? Or by keeping the same spread the handles would be more/less parallel from gripper to gripper? Those are the only questions that come to mind. Quote Chris Thomas

Doesn't RB do this? I don't know. My guess is that it would effect the difficulty of ths sweep or the close. Similar to how different parts of a bend are more or less difficult. Similar to how different parts of a bend are more or less difficult. Yep, that's what RB does. Personally I'm not a big fan of the coil size determining the strength. Feels like they bind to much at the end of the close and makes the gripper feel a little spongy. Quote Crushing is my business, and business is good.
MalachiMcMullen Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 RB does this. My RB210 and 260 have the same spring dia. but the 260 has a tighter coil. The 260 is also noticeably harder, probably right around 2.9ish while the 210 is at 2.8. I still like the idea of bigger springs because it's way cooler to see a big spring distorted during a big close. Quote Zach Coulter Goals #1- The Planche
Bill Piche Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 I like spring size variance and keep the coil size consistent. Quote
lukeamdman Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 If the the coil size is larger, the handles at parallel will be wider. I say stick with the same coil size and use the different spring size. Quote Luke Martin Current Goals: MM3 replica 2HP 220lb's

I agree. A lot of people post about the variance in RB grippers especially. I can't help but think this is one of the reasons. Quote
jad Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 I would stick with different wire dm. The RB's while component wise are top of the line, they vary all over the place. Some of them have absurd sweeps and then actually feel easier on the close. For example, it doesn't even feel like the same gripper in a choker. Quote Proud member of the Feat Cheaters Club! Bob Lipinski Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 I agree with everyone else. RB's often have a strange feel to them. Not that I dislike it, but if you are going for relative consistency and certs, I don't know if it is the way to go. Anyone notice that RB's feel strange on the negative? I use one RB regularly in training lately, a 240 that isn't designated narrow, but has a 2.5 spread. Easy to set, binds near the close, but it just seems to release really easy when I open it. Who knows, maybe I am weird. Quote US Handstrength

John Beatty Posted March 29, 2009 Author Posted March 29, 2009 Good enough, then, I wasn't really leaning too much this way, but thought it might be something interesting. We'll go the standard wire size route. Quote I like heavy things.
