dansweeney Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 Has anyone used ultrasound treatments for elbow tendon rehab, and if so what was your experience? This flare up is limiting almost every aspect of my training, and its getting me a little frustrated! Thanks in advance for any help! Quote
djulian Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Sorry about the elbow tendonitis. I did not use ultrasound though, so I am not answering your question - sorry. I put a lacrosse ball between a wall and the hurt tendon and rolled it up and down tendon (active release treatment). I also did negative reverse wrist curls on the extensors. It was cheap. mightyjoe Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 I've mentioned this before but I can't say enough good about T.E.N.S unit therapy. I've found nothing that works as well. Seriously! I got mine here: http://medicalproductsonline.org Gazza shared this treatment with me over a year ago and I'm healed from tendonitis, joint tweaks, etc. in 2-3 days. For thumb joint pain it's unbeatable. Try it! You'll like it! Hope this helps. Mighty Joe Quote If you focus on your problems, you'll have more problems. dansweeney Posted March 27, 2009 Author Posted March 27, 2009 Joe, I actually have a T.E.N.S unit. I used it for recovery from bending once, but it didnt seem to do much. Can you give specifics for your elbow rehab related to the T.E.N.S unit? Settings/time/etc.? It seemed like there was a guide to change lots of settings, but no advice on what settings did what specifically. Thanks! Quote

This flare up is limiting almost every aspect of my training, and its getting me a little frustrated! Thanks in advance for any help! I have a friend who is a PT and they use it for some elbow/knee/wrist tendon work. Grippster Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Rule #1 after getting hurt: Do not hurt it again, because I swear every time it's injured again the healing time goes up not double, but exponentially. 1 injury = 10 days. 2nd injury = 100 days. 3rd injury without the first one being able to heal? **$%.... I still don't know the answer to that one. Go easy on it - real easy for 2 weeks to be safe, or you'll end up like me not being able to make progress on grip strength and preaching on the gripboard about avoiding injuries. It's one thing to be frustrated that the swelling is making your workouts difficult. It's another to not be able to do it any more, at all, ever. Be patient. Quote
Shoggoth Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Pretty fast service. I ordered it last night and it'll be here Tuesday before I get home from work. Near instant gratification. I can't wait to try it out. I tried a smaller wand type model years ago on my traps and it seemed to help although this is more tendon. Will post my results. If you have any problems with the unit they'll send you another one. Don't loose your reciept. They'll need a copy of it for any returns. PM me when you get it and I'll give you some good tips for using it that I've discovered through about a year of use. Stay Strong!!! barbe705 Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 I have a unit myself. for some reason I never think to use it. when I have in the past I liked the results. causes a lot of blood flow to the area. I used it on a bicep strain and it allowed me to get back to some training right away. The best part is that some of the models can be worn around. that way you aren't limited as to when you can treat. Quote Brent Barbe "The truth is often stupid." Bender Bending Rodriguez

jad Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Aren't TENS units designed for pain management vs. actual fixing the problem? Quote Proud member of the Feat Cheaters Club! Captain of Crush 2003-2011 Josh Dale Wentzville, MO
barbe705 Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 they are for pain management. but, if you get the right unit/setting they can be used for rehab as well. Quote Brent Barbe "The truth is often stupid." Bender Bending Rodriguez
mightyjoe Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Aren't TENS units designed for pain management vs. actual fixing the problem? Depends on the problem. Pain management? Yes. Works well too. The whole idea is blood flow is increased to affected area which speeds healing faster than anything. The perfect time for TENS therapy is when resting. I can only speak of my experiences with TENS and mine has been fantastic. I can't imagine not using it now. Gazza uses one extensively and was nice enough to share his procedures with me. Hope this helps. Mighty Joe Quote If you focus on your problems, you'll have more problems. If you focus on your POSSIBILITIES, you'll have more OPPORTUNITIES ! It's the top of my right wrist I'm currently treating and it seems about gone. YEAH! I have used it in the past for tennis elbow after icing sessions. The combo works terrific for me. sjeff70 Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 I don't have any experience with the TENS machines, but I did have elbow problems from general weight training (30 years worth). The problem was later aggravated after getting into serious grip training. So my experience here is for those experiencing elbow problems from general weight training/grip training. 1. Finger extensions. Work them as hard and as seriously as your other grip training (work up to a few hard broccoli bands with one hand for high reps at a MINIMUM!). I doubt TENS can help strength imbalances. 2. Trigger Points on the upper forearms. Don't know if TENS can rid of trigger points. TENS may be like taking medicine...just masking the underlying problem? Yea, you'll probably get temporary relief but for how long? Also, I don't think there are any areas at the joints themselves that require pressure. I realized that after doing all of these things here, the pain in the elbows just goes away. Before I couldn't rest my weight on my elbow while driving. 3. Cycle your grip training. Just as you do your regular training. You got to do this anyway if you want to get anywhere. You have to do all three. Hopefully this info can help someone... Lastly, regarding the trigger points. Most people probably know that some trigger points in the forearms can be felt in the top of one's hands, but there are also areas in the shoulder blades that do this as well. It feels a little different but I've experienced it. Quote
