stagger Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Hello, new here and looking to start working on my grip. For a while I just checked out the log/routine board but realized that one thing sets me apart from most of the other people here and that's that I don't lift weights in general. I'm in the Marine Corps and in order to remain competetive for promotion and keep up in regular PT, I have to focus a lot on bodyweight exercise and running, so I devote most of my exercise time to that. So once a day, besides scheduled PT with the unit, I do some basic stuff like one-arm pushups, one-leg squats, pullups, crunches, and lifting a 35lb dumbell over my head for reps, and all that's pretty much for my job. Now, as a hobby, I want to train my grip. What I have: A sledgehammer, a set of heavygrips grippers, a twist-your-wrist roller from ironmind, and a flat handle spring clamp. I also have plates, not olympic though so not very good for pinching. I'm considering getting a regular wrist roller to use in addition to the twist one. So, with this equipment, and whatever may be improvised, can anyone give me an idea of what I should be doing? I'm paranoid about damaging a tendon but at the same time I know that since I don't lift weights other than this, I can probably handle a good amount of work. Long-term I'm not really interested in bending or getting certed with grippers, I just want to be strong. Levering I think is probably the coolest feat of grip strength and what I like the most. Thanks. Quote
BigJan85 Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 The plates you have could be used for plate curls and plate wrist curls. And yeah work all different kinds of levers with that sledge (front levers, rear levers, etc.)....There is probably a lot of other stuff around you that you could improvise with like maybe a coffee can filled with sand that you could lift with the finger tips. Maybe some rope for doing thick rope pull ups with. Im sure you'll get pretty creative once you start training more and more. Good luck to ya man! djulian Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 I would start by creating goals. For me it is - close a CoC #3, bend a 1/4 x 6 inch steel bar, dunk a basketball, do a freestanding hand stand push-up and others. For you it may be something more for your occupation (climbing, hand to hand combat, etc.). When you make your goals then you can focus your training. Quote 'Tilling my own grave to keep me level.'
