barbe705 Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 so, I was having massive elbow pain almost every time I did grip or went to the gym. about 2 weeks ago I started doing work on a bamboo bar every time I went to the gym. last night I hit the grippers hard(they were the most painful offender) and no pain afterwards. I strongly recommend the crazy plates benching if you have elbow trouble. I was doing 3 sets of 20-25 each workout. it has made a huge difference. after each workout it felt like my elbows were swollen with blood. and my shoulders are feeling a lot better as well. brent Quote Brent Barbe "The truth is often stupid." tja Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 I had absolutely no idea what you were talking about - google helped out. Very interesting, never would've thought of such an idea. Quote

barbe705 Posted March 10, 2009 Author Posted March 10, 2009 that's a good video but, they are doing it a little bit differently than I do. use mini bands so you get more sway and bounce. go light weight and high volume. and for some reason, it seems like it's popular to use kettlebells instead of plates. but, I guess plates would work fine. crazy plates, click me! barbe705 Posted March 10, 2009 Author Posted March 10, 2009 holy cow have they helped my elbows. It's a much different feeling than a bunch of band presses. it activates the whole region since the bar is trying to go forward and back and to the sides. I really can't say enough about it. plus, even if you don't have the special bar you can use a normal one. and I'm sure you have the mini bands. give it a try, I was really surprised. tja Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Is there a recommendation on how much weight should one use? Quote
barbe705 Posted March 10, 2009 Author Posted March 10, 2009 Is there a recommendation on how much weight should one use? Light. the first time I did them I had a 12K kettlebell on each side. that wasn't enough. I've been using a 16k since then. that feels about right for me. but, I'm a really crappy bencher. on the other hand you want to do higher reps so, if in doubt, use the lighter weight. Grippster Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 (edited) lol it's pretty bad that just about everyone on the gripboard has these joint problems I think it's coming to the point where a sticky needs to be made about injuries, how to avoid them, and what to do if you get hurt because this is getting to be an issue! ^and no, I'm actually serious. I'll write something up if anyone wants. Edited March 10, 2009 by Grippster Quote
AP Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Well injuries happen, sometimes its about avoiding them when possible and dealing with them when necessary. Quote Pastrami on Wry
Grippster Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Nobody who I know of that works out has ever been hurt as much as we have on the gripboard. I think that grip exercises are simply more strenuous on the elbows than most others. There's always topics coming up about injuries and how to fix them so it almost seems practical to have 1 main topic addressing the issues. Quote
mattvod Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Well injuries happen, sometimes its about avoiding them when possible and dealing with them when necessary. I think even more than 'injuries happen'... at least with me, I never back off enough to let them heal fully. I'm pretty sure a lot of guys here have that same problem. We're just too eager to get back to workin'... Quote
dansweeney Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 I tried these today and reallly like them! Brent, how long did it take for you to feel an improvement in your elbows? I used a 25lb plate each side, and it was a bit light, but Im looking more for the rehab properties.... Quote
barbe705 Posted March 11, 2009 Author Posted March 11, 2009 After about 2 weeks I noticed that I was having no pain in between workouts. workouts themselves were still a little tender but about 10-20% of what it had been. Quote Brent Barbe "The truth is often stupid." Bender Bending Rodriguez
verdigriz Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 My only major grip injuries came from reverse bending, and lets face it, the amount of force put into bending a bar is like the grip deadlift, everything contracts forcefully, and correct form is required, imsure my form was not the best. I think a sticky rehab article is a great idea Quote Try to become the type of person others do not normally encounter in this world
tja Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 barbe705, thanks for the weight suggestion. the amount of force put into bending a bar is like the grip deadlift, everything contracts forcefully, Very well said Quote
