curran32 Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Hello all, I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction in the grip world. I keep reading about grippers who say their biggest mistake is just concentrating on crush grip, but they never say what to do instead. I just bought a trainer and Lvl 1 gripper and can close with ease for sets on both. I would appreciate it if someone could give me some guidelines or products to use to maximize my grip as fast as possible! Kyle Curran Quote
Magnus Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 (edited) Do pinching, wide and thin. Use a pinch block, or plates with the smooth sides out, block weights, etc. Also, thick-bar training to increase your open-hand strength. An FBBC Crusher or Rolling Thunder will do. curran32 Posted March 2, 2009 Author Posted March 2, 2009 What should i do with the pinch? just pinch and raise it? Quote
Magnus Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 What should i do with the pinch? just pinch and raise it? That's up to you. You can do sets of reps, holds, etc. I like timed holds the best. curran32 Posted March 2, 2009 Author Posted March 2, 2009 Alright thanks thats definitely a good start Quote
curran32 Posted March 2, 2009 Author Posted March 2, 2009 Where is a good place to start with bending? Quote
curran32 Posted March 2, 2009 Author Posted March 2, 2009 Thanks man, this is going to help out a lot! Quote
PowerHouse Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Thanks man, this is going to help out a lot! I would do some type of wrist work for awhile before starting to bend. Wrist roller Levers with sledge(front/back/lever to the nose.....) Wrist curls Quote Goals: To be stronger then I was last week. I don't mean to be condescending(which means to talk down to)..........
PowerHouse Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 For wrists? I think doing levers with a sledge would be the best for carryover to bending. Quote Goals: To be stronger then I was last week. I don't mean to be condescending(which means to talk down to)..........
The Natural Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 (edited) Hello all, I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction in the grip world. I just bought a trainer and Lvl 1 gripper and can close with ease for sets on both. I would appreciate it if someone could give me some guidelines or products to use to maximize my grip as fast as possible!Kyle Curran Doing heavy deadlifts and squats will improve your grip more than grippers, assuming you're able to do those lifts. If you're really wanting it as fast as possible, I'd do this grip program Monday Squats (one set of 20). The last few should be hard. Try to go up every week. When you get stale, hit 3x3 or something for a few weeks. Then go back to 1x20. Pinch holds. Use a pinch block, two 45's smooth sides out on the end of an Oly bar. Whatever works. Get about 30 seconds of time under tension. Some gripper overcrushes. Practice your set too. Watch Paul Knight's video on setting. Thursday Deadlifts. Reverse grip on a 2" axle. 3x5. Same weight for each set. 80 percent range. FBBC Crusher, 1x15 with each hand. Find a weight that's tough. Try to add 5 pounds each week. Your favorite bulking assistance exercises (rows, benching, whatever. Just something to up your lean body weight). As far as diet, try to add 500 calories a day to whatever you are already eating. You'll need it with the training you'll be doing. Lots of protein too. These can be spaced out more if you want. 5 days apart. 6. Whatever is best for you. You'll notice this is different from the "Grippers, grippers, more grippers" approach that lots of newbies take. In 6 months, you'll be closing the same grippers as they are, and you'll be killing them on all the other grip stuff. If you’re under 200 pounds, under 18 years old, over 50 years old, female, retarded, or missing any limbs, you have the option to compete in the handicapped class. Otherwise you lift in the open class."
curran32 Posted March 2, 2009 Author Posted March 2, 2009 Thanks guys this is all helping me out tremendously. I workout every day but im just trying to incorporate some serious grip work. Quote
matthcarl Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Hi! I am not much of a grip expert, but I do like bending. I agree on getting an FBBC Bender's bag...if you do, I'd ask John to add a couple pair of suede leather wraps. They are my favorite. Chalking the wraps will help a lot, and I'd try to watch as many bending videos on youtube as you can. You cna learn a lot about technique that way. Does VT mean you're in Vermont? I'm not too far away in the grand scheme of gripping. Quote Name: Matt Carl Runner, Graphomaniac, Steel Bending Fiend
curran32 Posted March 2, 2009 Author Posted March 2, 2009 Alright I have been watchign a lot on the bending, any really important ones? VT is Vermont ya, where are you from? Quote

matthcarl Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Nice. Grip people are few and far between in this part of the country. I don't know Vermont that well, but I'm about 45 minutes from Manchester. There's going to be a competition this June in Massachusetts (Plymouth area). A bit of a drive, but definitely not bad for such a small sport. Grip contests are a lot of fun no matter what your level (as I can testify due to the butt-kicking I got at my first contest last year ) Quote Name: Matt Carl Runner, Graphomaniac, Steel Bending Fiend
curran32 Posted March 4, 2009 Author Posted March 4, 2009 Manchester is right down the road from me so im fairly close Quote
AnimalCage Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Springfield, MA checking in! Sadly, Matt and I (plus one or two others) are the closest right now. I met Matt and some others at a grip-together last year, and had a great time. Definitely try to make the Pilgrim. You will learn more in one day than in a year of you-tube.
