oczad Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Hi, I joined in hopes of getting a question answered about an issue i've had for close to 10 years now. In the mid to late 90's i began losing my fine motor control mainly in my left hand, which as a guitarist is devastating. i have come to the conclusion is is a loss of muscle strength and working out has indeed helped a lot. However, it's not so much my grip. In fact, my grip i think is strong enough, but what i believe is the problem is the muscles that are the opposite of grip. I believe these are the "extensors", no? I have been doing wrist curls and for the extensors the opposite where you gave the palm facing the floor and pull the weight up till the wrist is straight. the improvement in my playing is very noticeable. But knowing nothing about weight lifting i thought it would be a good idea to ask here and see what kind of advice you have as to whether i should keep doing the same or something you would recommend more. Also, i'm using a 8 Lb weight and i am 55 years old. So you may want to add my age to your answer. thanks very much in advance. Quote

The whole premise is that it is a thumbless pinch grip. The grip you use for the implement is the same as the grip you use while carrying large sheets of plywood/drywall/etc. The fingers are doing the all the pinching, the thumb is just there for moral support. The implement is basically a piece of plywood, or even a ready made thin-pinch device from FBBC or w/e, that can attach to a loading pin or weight stack and be lifted. Lifting it is like a brutal reverse curl except it leaves the biceps largely out of the equation. Make one, it's cheap, and get to work! You know, when you keep your thumb and palm on one side, and just the fingers on the others. Cannon Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 You could try finger walking. Any garden implement will work, or sledgehammer when you get stonger. Take the handle at the top between your finger tips, palms facing each other, and the weighted end hanging down. Then use your fingers like spider legs to lift the weight by advancing along the handle. Your hands stay at waist height. When you get to the end, lower the weight in the same way. Quote

I hear it makes the extensors really burn. You can try dexterity balls, too.
