taekwondo911 Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Hi, Yesterday I went to the movies with my friends, but before entering I said to my friends remember the grippers that I have been talking to you about? They said yeah We want to see them So I gave them my 1.5 for an attempt One of them who lifts weights is 53kgs but his upper body is strong, he has really muscular forearms and when he attempted to close the grippers guess what? He barely got it past parallel The other one who is not strong barely got it to parallel They told me can you close this thing? I said ''sure'' and then mashed it with three fingers. They were really impressed and kept attempting to close it but they didnt Quote goals: full side splits 15 hand stand push ups L-sit 50 burpees in 2:30 100 push ups 10 one armed hindu (dand) push ups 30 kg weighted chin up close the no.2 thumb push up 12-sept-2008
Grippster Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 (edited) Same story with the BC300. Guys would be like "how do you move this it's a brick!?!" and I'd simply close it. I can imagine how impressive it would be to do that with a #3. On the side - I'd just like to say that I really don't train to show off it's all about functionality for me. I want a strong grip to make my life easier. Easier to lift things, easier to hold my own weight, easier to work on just about everything that requires strength. But I'm not gonna lie, I find it amusing when most people prove to have half my gripping power. Edited February 27, 2009 by Grippster Quote
cptnamazin Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 That's probably one of my favorite things to do. I had someone ask me once, "how many reps can you do on this?" and hand me a padded WalMart gripper. I took it in my thumb and forefinger, as if I were pinching it, and started counting out reps for him. I got to nine before I started laughing my arse off. I also like bringing my #2.5 to bars, finding the biggest guy there, mashing it, and betting him the next round he can't close it. I haven't paid for a drink in a long time. Quote I want to be built like a brick shithouse. Like, seriously, I want people to walk up to me, newspaper in hand, and ask the bloke standing next to me, "Where's the door?"
Steve B. Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 The thing is it's like asking someone to bench press 300lbs that has never bench pressed. No experience ,no technique.no specific strength ect. JMO but you should give them some quick technique lessons and see how they do then. Not that they'll close it but your giving them some advantage and trying to help them succeed. I like to do the same thing if i come across someone that works with thier hands, plumber, mechanic ect. It's an intresting experiment. Quote

I haven't paid for a drink in a long time. I talk to my buddies sometimes about hand strength, who actually do see the value in having strong hands and forearms. So one guy was like "yea, I use the gripper when I'm watching TV sometimes. After a few minutes it gives your hand a really nice workout! How many reps do you think you can do?" So I tell them I don't use the plastic ones because I break them too easily. So of course they're like "How?!" And basically what happens is I do so many reps that the spring overheats and snaps and of course they don't believe me lol. But what makes it funny is that people who work out THINK they have a strong grip. People who don't bench KNOW they aren't strong that way. Quote
Jeff Parker Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 grippers are not the end all for how strong your grip is. It is a very specific strength that is developed mostly from actually training grippers. Many people may have a strong grip, just in a different area. If someone works out at the gym with heavy weights and does not use straps they will have a very strong supporting grip. Quote
Grippster Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 Good point. But most of us who train grippers work out with heavy weights anyways. So we get good supporting grip and crushing grip. And pinch too if you train with blobs... or drywall Quote

ihvpcinhm Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 I bring my grippers to work. I work in an addiction treament program. When I bring out the grippers I have plenty of guys wanting to try them. I have seen a lot of guys try them. I give them a little heads up regarding closing them. Most just try to close it to parallel, but when they find out they have to touch the handles they realize how hard they are. Most guys can't close the #1. I have however seen 2 men pick up the 2 and almost close it the first time. I was really impressed. A lot of times it seems to have to do with what kind of trade the man has done his whole life. Grippster Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Although, you have to be careful the guy isn't naturally strong b/c I've seen people who might be able to close a 2.5 first try. The #3 is a safe bet Quote
BroodingMoon Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 It would be if I could mash a #3 Quote Chris Thomas
Grippster Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 Well what are you waiting for then? You obviously don't train hard enough. If you trained like I did you'd have the #3 TNSed by now! Quote
BroodingMoon Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 Steady on there I've only owned a #3 for a month or so! But I will get there I know it Quote Chris Thomas
Darco Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 I can't believe someone who weighed 53 kilos could not close a 1.5 without training. Have you perhaps thought of feeding him, letting him out of the hole ? I'm sure he's tired of hearing "It places the lotion on it's skin or else it gets the hose again."
