Volko Krull Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 (edited) Complete Bending Progression Chart Hi folks, I feel that this „question“ has often been discussed but never thoroughly enough. I'm working on providing an answer for the question about the exact order of known bending material with regard to the strength it takes to bend it. At first I'd like to give a little table that translates the common inch dates to metric stock dates. Inch/Metric Translation 7"“ 17.78cm 6.5"“ 16.51cm 6" 15.24cm 5.5"“ 13.97cm 5"“ 12.70cm 4.5"“ 11.43cm 4"“ 10.16cm 3.5"“ 8.89cm 3"“ 7.62cm 3/16"“ 4.7mm 4/16"“(1/4") 6.3mm 5/16"“ 7.9mm 6/16"“ 9.5mm 7/16"“ 11.1mm 8/16"“ 12.7mm In Germany where I live you find the bending stock dated in centi- and millimeters. Thus calculating, I found out that I'm currently able to bend 4/16“ x 6“ HRS. In September I'll turn 16, and I will go as far in bending as God allows me to. For the purpose of streng- thening my wrist and finger tendons I perform Isos on a 7“ piece of 5/16“ HRS that I can't bend yet, for bending improvement I cut down my stuff, prekink loads of HRS and try to increase the bar diameter when possible. I worked that way for some month and by now I bend 60Ds double underhand for volume. Last week I began thinking about a complete list of bending stock, making progression in the world of bending easier for the young beginner like I'm one. For constructing a list like this, we would have to answer some general questions first, about which I don't know anthing regarding an answer because I don't have the possibilty to calibrate steel. a) Starting out from HRS, how much harder (or weaker) in percent is ... ... CRS ? ... Stainless ? ... Grade 2 ? ... Grade 5 ? ... Grade 8 ? ... Brass ? b) What difference to round stock in strength, percentagewise, makes ... ... square ? ... hexagonal ? c) Taking a 7“ of anything, what difference in strength, pc.wise, makes ... ... 6.5"“ ? ... 6"“ ? ... 5.5"“ ? ... 5"“ ? ... 4.5"“ ? ... 4"“ ? ... 3.5"“ ? ... 3"“ ? d) Taking a 3/16" of anything, what difference in strength, pc.wise, makes ... ... the increment of 1/16" of an inch in diameter ? (The strength increase would decrease exponentially with the bars going fatter in diameter because we're talking about percentage. We, of course, would also have to know this decreasing factor per 1/16" increment) With exact answers to these questions given, we could determine, let's say, the strength difference between a 6/16 x 5.5" piece of HRS and a 5/16“x 6" piece of stainless hex. In short, these answers or rather determining factors would be the key to a ranking of all the bending stock out there. We could also tie in (xx)D nails and timber ties. I know it's a heck of a lot of work to do, but I really believe that if everybody tries to contribute something, this will be a piece of cake. There's another question that would make determining the ranking easier : e) Taking HRS (CRS, shiny, brass / round, square, hex ← all combinations), how far would one have to cut the rod down to make it as hard as a 7" piece of the same stock, but 1/16" more in diameter ? Knowing that, we could already rank the different bar of the same kind of steel for themselves. Then it would only be a matter of comparing the different steel sorts to do the total ranking. To all you very experienced guys bending Reds and stock like that, it wouldn't be a big help, but to a young, rather unexperienced grip guy like me it would be great support. Furthermore, it would be an interesting thing to know, and good to compare world class benders more accurate. Come on everybody, especially the pros and superhuman vicelike benders here, we can put that list together ! Maybe information from the calibration thread could also be helpful ? When done I would try my best in compiling the info and realigning the above given bending stock into a strength ranking. Best regards, Volko PS.: If we can get this done, the admin could pin it as an informational article. PPS.: I'm really sorry that there's practically no space between the names and the gauges, the board converts it like this. Edited February 25, 2009 by Volko Krull Quote

BigTone Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 Aaron posted this a while back and I just ran across it yesterday. http://www.az-grip.com/FBBCSteelProgression.htm That has to be one of the best lists I've seen so far. If that doesn't help you then you then I don't know what will! Quote Anthony (Tony) Z. 2009 Goals: #3 Red Nail Deadlift 500 lbs

acorn Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 did u type all that out wow how long did that take Most of it, a while but I didnt do it all at once. Made it to be my personal progression list. Didnt plan to put it out there for everyone, but I dont mind either. - Aaron Quote ** Retired **
