Does anybody have any tips for me on building my thumb pad without any weights or special equipmant. I want to try and use some of my time in the car and lunch breaks to build a turkey leg pad!! I do pinch at home but does anyone have any good thumb burners that don't need equipment?

without equipment? i guess if you don't count a tennis ball or pony clamp as equipment

Yeah, I see your idea, I've used clamps before they work ok for me.

Is there anything that I can do discreatly though, you know, like at me desk without anyone knowing?

I believe I have just the thing for you, and it only costs pennies to obtain. I have been working on it for the past few days and I will post a video explaining how it works. It is portable and can be used in the car, office, wherever. It also allows the user to quantitatively measure your progress, taking the subjectivity out of the equation. Look out for the video in the next couple of days.

You've got my attention! I would also like a "turkey leg" thumb pad. I've never felt like I am effectively training my thumb pad.

Talking about this makes me wonder, can you really pack on size on the thumb pad or is most of it genetics? I've seen Clay talking about it being genetics mainly. There are guys I've seen with huge pads closing big grippers and also guys that seem to have an average pad (tommy) also closing big big grippers. This leads me to think that closing grippers alone won't build the thumb pad at all.

Is there anyone here on the board that started of with a small pad and built it up to a turky leg? If some what packs on size the most?

Get a good number of rubber bans or any really strong bands that can stretch some. Grab the bands with both your thumbs. Put your hands on a table (the edge of a table or desk is more comfortable) now stretch the band without moving your hands, focus on making your thumbs touch the inside of palm. Do it for reps.

That's a GREAT idea!

Thanks for sharing!

I'm anxious to see what NaturalStrength has come up

I would consider it special equipment, but a wrist-roller of at least 2.5" works the thumbs rather well I find. As the weight goes up, the thumbs get a real workout. I would also add (and in no way am I suggesting anyone thinks this) that I don't feel that the size of the thumbpad is important compared to the strength of the area. So find any exercise that works the thumb and use it until it becomes easy, then keep progressing.

Oh! and why why why must you make us wait on a new exercise NaturalStrength?!? I have very little patience when it comes to learning something exciting... don't wave a branch in front of dogs without throwing :tongue

I think so.. ;)

You need towel, some kind of hand towel is nice. Bigger towel is harder, make little research what fits you. Now grasp at top of the towel and start to roll towel up in your hand. That might be quite hard at the beginning but stick with it. That is great dexterity exercise too. When you get used with technique, you need a rope and small bucket. Make hole in one corner of that towel and put rope trough it and lace it to the bucket. Now you can add weight there when you get better. Sand is nice, you really don't need much extra weight with this.

That is great exercise on a whole hand, not just a thumb.

Give it a try :)

I do protation stuff for armwrestling where I wrap a strap around just my thumb and then just pronate for reps or holds.

Hits the thumb pad decently.

The little spring clamps from standard bars work really good for building the thumb...I just do timed holds with them.

Naturalstrength, hook us up! I'm really excited about this :yikes

I am sorry guys, I have been stupid busy lately so haven't had much time to finish the project. I am hoping to get it finalized soon since my first idea didn't work as well as expected. I will get it out soon, I just hope the idea doesn't get shot down by members from this board. :blush

As for building the size on thumbpad, I'd be more concerned about the thumb strength, as the hands will thicken some in the long run, but I certainly would not consider it a priority. In any case, we are talking about really small muscles here. For thumb strength, block weights are good if not the best. Namely tossing them from hand to hand, cleans, snatches, etc.

I NEED to build the thumb pad so te gripper handle has a better base to rest. My fingers have the strength to close the #3, maybe even more as when I hold the gripper handle down in my palm I can do the #3 no problem. When I try a normal close, the gripper slips down my palm, I hope if I thicken my pad then the gripper will have a more stable base. What do you think teemu?
