Hardness Levels

I am sure this is probably somewhere on the board, but I looked for a good while and couldn't find the answers I wanted. I just recently bent a G8 for the first time. My next goal is to get to the bastard. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how difficult the jump is from G8 to bastard. I know it is hard to quantify, but any way you could help me understand would be awesome. Also, which is harder? the bastard or the red nail? and what is the difference between the two?

Thanks for the help, I hope these questions are clear enough. Let me know if they are not.

Steel varies. Sometimes the Red is harder and sometimes the Bastard. But in general the Bastard is harder. And the jump from a G8 to a Bastard isn't THAT huge. Try to bend a 1/4*7" sq and cut or or even a 5.5 G8. Maybe even a G9. But before going to attempt a Red or a Bastard try to bend a kinda hard bend for you at 7" (like 1/4*7" sq) to have the right feeling for longer stuff. Even better try the sq at 7.5". Then the 7" will be a joke.

As I have said before, The G8 kinks much easier than a bastard, but I feel they crush down about the same. I think the 1/4" square and 5/16 G2 bolts are only slightly easier to kink than a bastard, so I would practice with those.

Thanks guys. I was wondering about the red and the bastard because there are so many certified bastards and so few certified red benders.

You also gotta realize the red cert is in ironmind pads and a time limit of 1 minute. The bastard cert is 5 minute time limit with whatever padding you want.

If it were me, I would go to Home Depot, or Lowes, and get a 3' piece of 5/16'' HRS, and a 3' piece of 5/16'' crs steel rod back where the hardware is. Then cut em' up in 7'', 6.5, and 6'' lengths. Bend em. Lowes steelworks rod is very close to Bastard strength. I know the biggest thing for me was the mental barrier of the larger stock. It also seems like it's harder to get a kink in the thicker stock, even though it might be rated lower in poundage. This is due to the force being distributed over a larger area. Hope this helped!! Jeremiah, great idea but Home Depots HRS isn't really HRS, it's Steelworks stuff so the HRS is pretty much the exact strength of the CRS. He needs to get REAL A36 HRS.

Jason, get some 1/4" Square, 5/16" CRS and 5/16" HRS. You can also try DR if necessary, but you should be fine without it. As of right now, the Red is DEFINITELY harder!! The Reds of right now are harder than any bastard batch except that psychotic batch that's comparable to a hexabastard.

Dont even sweat the differences. If you can not finish the bend, than save it for ISOs, and it will fall. Every single bender here uses isometrics with a tough bar. If your bending Gr8's now, than Reds and Bastards are in your future. Stay at it, your on the road.

If you going to be buying to 2 or 3 pcs. of steel from Home Depot

I would go to a steelyard and get for the price of 3pcs. of steel

you could probably get a 20' pc. for the same price

If you were going to be bending a ton of the generic 5/16, then I agree, go to a steel supplier. But just to give 5/16'' a shot, the hardware store is much more convienient. I say this: if you want to try out 5/16, get a piece from Lowes. If you find it's too hard, go to a steel supplier to get real A36 hrs. Bend this in 7, 6.5, and 6'' lengths, once it gets easy, bend the steel you had left over from Lowes, then bend a bastard.

The problem I have with this is that the people at home depot and lowes are morons and never know what anything is. The resident "nail expert" did not know what a 60d was and told me I was mistaken, the highest they go is 16d... So I have some serious stupidity to deal with, but I have no idea what all this stuff looks like, but I will give it a try. Thanks for all the advice guys.

Jason, If you go back to where all the bolts and stuff are, look around for a rack with tall pieces of angle iron, allthread, ect. sticking up out of it. It might say "project center" on it, or on a sign near it. You will see the rods in all different diameters in the front of the rack. they are all usually 3' pieces. All of them have little white tags on them that tell you what they are. The HRS will have a red painted end. The CRS has a blue painted end. If for some reason the ends are not painted, the tag will say HRS or CRS and the rod diameter(1/4, 5/16, ect.). I agree, don't fool with the employees, they are clueless. Oh yeah, the 60d's are in a cardboard box by the timber spikes. I think they are like 20 cents each. Grab one of the clear bags and fill it up. They don't sell em' pre-packaged. Hope this helped!! Thanks, I was able to find the 60d and I bought a full box last week, but I had to search the store myself, haha, but thanks for the advice. So you think the red painted rods are the best to be training with for my level?
