climber511 Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 It doesn't take a lot of fancy equipment to build a pretty darn good grip. With an Olympic barbell set, a lever set up (sledge etc), maybe some 2x4s etc and some imagination - you would be surprised what you can do. Sure, if you want to compete, at some point you will want the actual equipment that will be used to train on but that's just refining - remember that some of the old timers had incredible grips and never heard of grippers, Euro Pinch setups, V-bars, and all the rest of our "toys" and they did all right. It seems the more stuff I have (and I have a lot) - the fewer things I actually train with - once you learn what works for YOU - you can get a lot of carry over to other things. MRabich Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 I'd say grippers IM 1-3 or equivalent, a thick bar which you can make yourself, a sledge or something similar for levering is all you need. Plus you can make your own pinch blocks. Quote

Amen - I have tons of stuff I rarely use anymore. Your barbell and plates will pretty much take care of all of it. Quote Morgan Guthner Fairfax, VA Goals - be a better arm wrestler
hab34buy Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 While I agree with Climber511 that keeping it simple is the way to go... I also know that sooner or later... I HAVE TO HAVE IT ALL!!!! The wallet wouldn't allow that, but I can certainly wish. In my limited and humble opinion, I would say that the best things to consider the basics without having to spend both arms and legs when starting out (like me), would be a sledgehammer for levering (plus you can use it for other things... like hammering spikes ), grippers (optional), a thickbar (homemade works for me right now), a wristroller (again, homemade), blockweights, and of course good ol' fashion weights and plates (these can cost an awefull lot up front I might add, but the payoff IS worth it). That's about my entire gym at the moment actually... I definitely think though that from what I have read here (haven't gotten to try any yet) some of the fancy devices (guillotine-type grip machines, PEG, Formulator, etc.) seem to work wonders. I did splurge on a powerball this past year, which is a very good purchase, one that I would recommend for active recovery. ~Jay Quote Jared "JW" Walker Goals: To Reach Tomorrow What I Couldn't Today
Blackheart Posted October 29, 2007 Author Posted October 29, 2007 (edited) Yeah my wallet also cannot permit expensive grip "shopping", my grip tools include grippers, pinch blocks (wooden) , 2 2 inches thick home made barbells (non revolving), RT, sledge, and wrist roller.i can't have access to blockweigfhts, the amount of money is truly enormous when i have to buy a blockweight from the usa ,and the same for other tools, like grip machines the blob ( ) , inch dumbbel ( ) etc etc, so i have no choice but to train on the things i got!!!! as for the blob and inch.....lol even if i had them i would not be able to move them from the floor...at least for now.. Steve B. Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 If you go with what Brookfiels says block weights = hand strength. Quote
Rick Walker Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 -Grip machine (it is like having a million different grippers, and you can microload, use it for pinch, etc.) -Wide pinch implement (be it a hex head or blob, loadable instrument, block of wood, chunk of steel, leg extension machine: (part that rests on your shins, put the weight pin in, pinch, lift!) etc.) -Barbell and plates (wrist flexion/extension, plate pinches, plate wrist curls, plate curls, hub pinch, 1-arm deadlift, double overhand deadlift, single/double/triple finger lifts, thick bar (slide some foam over it, or some PVC)). -Sledge hammer: hits the wrists in ways the barbell and plate wrist curls do not. You can also simulate this with PVC and a couple of small screw collars. -A couple of heavy steel shots for hand rotations. All of that should cost well under $100. Especially if you make it or find it. Getting strong is not exspensive, regardless of what strength you are looking for. Be it body (some squat stands, a barbell, some plates, or hell, even stones, sandbags, tires, logs, and "sloshing pillars of pain") or the hands as listed above. You can get strong, big, and thick with very little if you have the drive and a good imagination. I can go out to my garage right now and find 20 different things that can help make you stronger, and I don't have a single weight plate, bar, or machine out there.
