layla Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 I cant seem to find any dumbbells that look like the ones used to make blobs,I can find hex bells all over the place. Can effective blobs be made from these? I know that the standard plates made by the same company are slick when trying to pinch them, perhaps sanding them? debating between making blobs or buyin the "bomb" Quote I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS ONE NATION UNDER GOD,INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me
vikingsrule92 Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 Firstly, yes you can make hex blobs. I think most feel real blobs are better do to the slope but hex blobs aren't a bad solution. Yes the york dumbbells are very hard to find, that's why a lot of people buy them from Sean Dockery in the selling forum where he sells york blobs regularly. Sanding them would help, but it would also be cheating in my opinion, I would say just use them and they will wear in. Lastly, blobs are WAY more effective than a bomb, a bomb is just a cool toy to have while blobs are the most effective piece of grip equipment in my opinion. Quote
dimmers Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 York have started to make the legacy dumbells again on the internet... do a search for them. Quote
crobb1320 Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 for me the hex blobs carry over to york blobs and then some.as far as the plates are concerned they are usually slick until they start to hold some chalk.unless they are hamertone painted,i use cap plates which are just regular black paint.i really like the hex blobs and find them extremely effective. good luck with your training. Scott Styles Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 The hex blocks work fine. I've heard the new legacy dumbells from york are not comparable to the old ones. Given the price, just get a blob off the board if you are prepared to go that route. Quote You don't get a dog and do the barking yourself.
Mitch1963 Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 I have been trying to contact Sean with no luck. I would be interested in a blob or two. I sent him a PM but have not heard back. gerryg Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 I own the 27.5,30,32.5,35,37.5,40,42.5, and 50 pound York blobs. I also own a 27.5 hex which I think is a tougher lift than the 30 pound york. The real deal Yorks are a tough find but the hex blobs work just as well. Quote
makey98 Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 I would go to Play it Again sports or some other used sporting goods store or garage sale and buy a couple of hex dumbells. Half of a 60# dumbell is a good starting point and you shouldn't have to pay more than 40cents a pound. Hex blobs vary quite a bit in width a slickness, so look around. A little bit wider of a block will be MUCH more difficult and some of the one with the rust-oleum type paint are a pain to sand off and don't hold chalk well. Add to some wieght to those if you can lift it easy or buy a 35# or 40# or whatever and then when you find a blob that you want for a good price, go ahead and get one. Blobs are expensive and it is much better to start off with some cheap hex's to see where you are at and how much you improve so you can get a blob that is right for you. Pryderi Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 Don't forget to look at craigslist for some cheap dumbbells: http://geo.craigslist.org/iso/us/tx Quote Danny
Mitch1963 Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 I went to Play It Again Sports a couple of weeks ago and bought a 40, 50, 60, 75, and 80 for $150.00. I had to buy the 45-60 new. I was surprised that I could lift the 80 cut in half. To lift it is one thing...to try and curl it is a different story.
