David Horne Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 I’m sad to have to announce that I will not be coming to the GGC. A few have known that I have been fighting a finger injury that’s been there for about 3 weeks, but which has got a lot worse in the last week. The injury has meant that I cannot straighten my finger. I have had my finger strapped all the time, and have been to the docs, and she said that I have sprained the finger, or maybe that the finger has a state of Trigger Finger, as it's not straightening and is locking up. If the injury had have been on any other body part I would have competed, as I have in the past (sometimes with disastrous results). But this is my first finger injury prior to a comp and it just negates your hand strength massively. Believe me when your biggest pinch suddenly becomes 72.9k as it did today!! I am on strong painkillers and anti-inflams. This is my year all over contest wise. I will just be the referee at my own bending event. I took every competitor seriously for this event, and started training for this on 23rd April. The programme yielded great results (which don’t mean anything now), but this is what I thought was needed to beat the quality of the guys in this contest. I had never trained so hard for a comp ever. I am absolutely gutted, I have trained for 16 weeks for this, and my strength was the best ever. But such is life! Unfortunately the flight has been booked ever since I got the kind sponsorship. The ticket is non transferable, so the money is lost. I feel terrible about this, and have had a word with Steve Gardener. I will contact all of you individually through a pm, but I want to give you the money back out of my own money. This will take a little time as I will have to get it together. To my friends Jedd and Smitty, I’m so sorry this hasn’t worked out, and I tried my hardest today – it was disheartening and embarrassing! Thank you for your great kindness! Sorry for the let down guys! David Quote

mobsterone Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 I spoke to David via MSN and on the phone in the last few days and his frustration is obvious and palpable - he is such a fierce competitor - so it is as he says more gutting that it might be for many. I've already told Dave that as far as I'm concerned the money is not an issue for me. He then kindly donated some towards my charity pulls on the 1st and 8th of September - much appreciated. Time to rest and heal. Quote Steve Gardener, British 2006/2008/2009/2010 champ, 117.5kg 2HP, Euro 2008 & 2010 champ

burkhardmacht Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 David, that are some bad news indeed. I hope You recover quickly from Your injury to come back for the next GGC. In the meantime perhaps Mob could compete in the GGC this year - so the ticket would not be wasted. A nice thought but even if I could I have two events and publicity for them lined up over the next three weeks and have not used a Rolling Thunder for months nor down any serious bending for longer - but cheers just the same. smitty Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 I knew of the injury and was hoping it would get better, but you can't rush these things. Very sorry I don't get a chance this year to meet you, but we will soon. Thanks for all of your efforts getting better and trying to still come - I know it has been hard. climber511 Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 I am so sorry! I looked forward to meeting you and having the chance to compete against you but these things happen and competing injured is just asking to make it much worse. I know it would be hard to justify the expense but as you have the ticket - I'm sure we'd be honored to have you judge the contest - might as well have a short vacation to the states at least. David Horne Posted August 20, 2007 Author Posted August 20, 2007 Guys, Thanks for your kind pm's and posts. I'm glad I got through today's try without it snapping. Although I now have even more pain in the finger and deep in the forearm. I've done the 'not listening to my body' before and on a couple of notable occasions it ended up with surgery. So maybe I've learned something, or lucky enough to have stopped now. Chris, Of course I wanted to meet all you guys, but I have to be arriving as a competitive athlete! It's just the way I am. I love competing, and put a 100% into it. Anyway, I wish everyone all the best. Break records, lift well and be safe! David Quote
egg_uk Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 why dont you just go for the experience, and to meet everyone, you could record stuff and/or help as a judge. if its all paid for, why not, everyone likes a holiday. Quote Goals Get Stronger Lift what I haven't lifted Close what I haven't closed
