John Beatty Posted August 19, 2007 Posted August 19, 2007 I apparently have bigger ideas than ability again. I tried the 1/4" x 3/4" x 8" CRS & got nothing. Cut it at 10" & got nothing. Not even a wiggle. Will try again in a few days with some other stock sizes & lengths. Any suggestions for sizes from the more advanced braced benders? I'll list the various stocks I got in a few days when I get a chance to look up the invoice or measure everything. Quote I like heavy things.
Tim71 Posted August 19, 2007 Posted August 19, 2007 I had suspected this. I know I did 1/4 by 1 inch HRS at 8 inches and it was a very tough bend. If you're set on CRS then maybe 3/16 would still be a good bend. Haven't tried it though. I'd like to find some 1/4 by 3/4 inch HRS. I think it would be a good volume bender for wrenches but still be a very tough bend at 8 inches. The flat steel can be very deceptive. I bought some 3/8 inch thick that I though, "ah I'll bend that" and well it didn't work out that way. Certainly not at 8 inches. In CRS then either 1/4 by 1/2 inch or 3/16 by 1 inch would probably be the way to go. May make a good cert bend though for your website. Tim Quote
com202 Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 I hope i got hrs when I bought that flat steel the other day..... I got 1"x1/4", 3/4"x1/4" and 3/16"x1" I'm probably going to get it cut Tuesday. climber511 Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 I tried some 3/8" square hot roll - at 16 and 15". 15 was hard for me at that one point where I just can't seem to find the leverage - you guys might cut some of it down and try it sort of like spike bending. Not sure what 8 or 10 inches of it would be Quote When people used to ask him how it was he became so incredibly strong, it was always the same, "strengthen your mind, the rest will follow". Tim71 Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 Climber, The 8 inch by 3/8 inch is a tough bend. Possibly tougher than the 80d spikes but it's hard to say because of the much different feel. Mean crush. 10mm and 3/8 square I'd actually say the 3/8 inch by 8 inch square was probably as tough as some of the tougher 8 inch crescents I've done. Different feel again. Tim Quote

com202 Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Finally got the steel cut down a couple hours ago. Here are the results. I did end up getting HRS..... thankfully 1"x1/4"---- kinked a 12" and 13". 3/4"x1/4"----- full bend on a 12" and 11". Kink on a 10". 3/16"x1"------- full bend on a 12" and 10". Kink on a 8". My only excuse is that I bent horseshoes yesterday and my thigh was already killing me when I started today. Not what I was hoping for, but I now know where I stand. Time to get serious. I really like the feel of the flat steel. Thanks Tim for helping me out with the information. If anybody has any questions feel free to ask.
