Klotz Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 When school starts again I'll be the only man in the apartment, so I'll permanently be on jar duty. I can handle most jars, but occasionally one comes a long that needs hot water, towel, banging, etc. What kind of grip should I work on so that I can just pop the top off any jar? I imagine pinch strength has a big part in it, which I do train. What else? Quote

bowermdw@yahoo.com Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 The Twist Yo' Wrist from IronMind http://www6.mailordercentral.com/ironmind/...asp?number=1369 is advertised with "...jars that were so hard to open..." in the title. I was investigating this grip tool for opening door knobs, but I bought the Hub Sultan's Squeeze to target my pinch grip after writing IronMind. TTYL, Doug Quote
Scott Styles Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 This sounds like some mighty fine trolling, but I'll bite. Get a thin sheet of rubber to hold between your hand and the jar lid to increase friction when you try to open it. All gripping the jar really hard will do is force the jar lid into the threads of the jar, making it harder to open. Quote You don't get a dog and do the barking yourself.

Bob Lipinski Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 Scott, I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking that way! Actually though, the opening of tough jars is a strongman tradition that goes back ages. Even Thomas Inch had his own "unopenable jar" which none other than John Grimek was finally able to open in the 1940's. Interestingly, Joe Roark has brought forth the theory that Mr. Inch owned several jars, and actually did all of his attempts on a similar looking yet substantially easier jar. Also, here is a good tip for being able to really hurt someone when you shake their hands: Take a loose grip, which will initially suprise them. When they begin to bear down on your hand, kick them in the nuts as hard as you can. Quote US Handstrength
Klotz Posted August 16, 2007 Author Posted August 16, 2007 Thanks for the replies. And no, I'm not a troll. Here's a video of me ripping a really small phonebook without the cover. (the biggest phonebook I've done was Toronto, but I still can't do the cover.) http://youtube.com/watch?v=Bh4F_KOa88c Quote

Mikael Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 (edited) This reminds me of something that has happened several times. My mom wants help from my dad and me to open a jar. She has tried first to do it but failed. My dad and I try, and we also fail. Then my mom tries again, and succeeds! Anyone else had this happen? Edited August 16, 2007 by Mikael Quote

Guest Bonzi Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 Mind over matter. It is for real. When you get the smallest doubt in your mind, then you are defeating yourself. Opening jars is a perfect example. I remember as a kid our family went on a vacation to a theme park where they had designed a house where when you entered the room, it made a person think that they were walking at an angle when you were actually not. Then the guide said that no one could stand up after sitting down. I promptly stood up and everyone was amazed, kinda-sorta. But the point is, if you do not allow exterior influences to affect you everything is possible. Quote

Shop teacher couldnt open a jar of paint so he handed it to me and it opened right up. He was totally embarassed and gave the classic "you loosed it up". MRabich Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 I remember a lady in a fast food joint asked me to open a snapple for her, it took me like 4 pulls but I got it. Once in a while we have a jar in the house that doesn't open, then you have to get a knife into the crease between jar and lid and allow oxygen to get in, then it's an easy open. Quote
