Grip Strength For Basketball

Recommended Posts

What specific exercises would help me palm a basketball better? I'm guessing pinching strength? The only thing is that your hand is spread way out on a basketball.

I suppose having strength in the fingertips would help, but with 7 1/4" hands I don't think I personally could palm a basketball no matter how strong my pinch was.

Palming a basketball is something that is based more on hand size than hand strength. You really need to be able to spread the digits out over the ball in order to grip it.

If you think your hands are big enough to get a good bite on it, but think it is a weakness that is keeping you from holding it, then i would suggest taking a brake rotor and taping a weight to the bottom of it and gripping it from the top. This would be like lifting a blob by the face.

Hopefully you are understanding my description. Good luck.

The reason I asked is because even though my hand is only 7" long, there are other people I know with hands the same size who can palm a ball no problem. Also to note the guy who can do it works on a dairy farm.

I thought of another thing that could work, palming smaller medecine balls that I can palm yet are heavy. I like the idea of

taking a brake rotor and taping a weight to the bottom of it and gripping it from the top

Um, can I ask YOU a question?... is it that big of a deal for you to palm a basketball instead of just working right now on your overall grip strength?

Your first two posts on this forum tipped me off - BTW, welcome to the GripBoard!! :D

I began a thread on this awhile back. In general the response seemed to be that even increasing TS gripper strength could help you palm a basketball. IMO this makes some sense since a bball is much lighter than a blob and increasing hand grip in any way could aid -- like the dairy farmer guy.

keep your hands dry and you will pinch it. I sometimes have sweaty hands and can't. But when my hands are kinda dry then yes I can. My hands are 7.5".
