matthcarl Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 (edited) As I've posted elsewhere, I am just getting into bending and finding it a lot of fun. I tried a 3/16x7" square rod, and while it went down, it sure wasn't pretty. For one thing, it sort of twisted and bent across the diagonal, which increases the diameter. Is that normal, or just bad technique? Also it was the mother of off-center bends, though I thought I had it wrapped evenly. Was it just weaker on one side? On the bright side, it was so far off it look slike I'll be able to do a 5" length no problem. I'll try to post a picture later. Autolupus Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 That's normal, bending on the flat actually makes it harder... and just to be pedantic, diameter is only used when dealing with circles, it would be the width on the diagonal. Quote Mike Mackenzie. Luceo non uro.
matthcarl Posted August 9, 2007 Author Posted August 9, 2007 OK, I guess I thought the flat would be easier. I see your point about diameter, but I think I am correct geometrically speaking any shape can be inscribed within a circle and described by a diameter. That's enough. My head hurts. gerryg Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 I had the pretty much the same question when I started bending, bend the square stock at the corners. Just wait till you feel the 1/4" square, it feels like a rock to me! Also I don't know if you already know this but FBBC sells some good bending stock, a much better selection than Ironmind. http://www.fatbastardbarbellco.com/BENDERSBAG.html Quote
matthcarl Posted August 9, 2007 Author Posted August 9, 2007 Yeah, this stuff was from FBBC. I got the beginner's bag just the other day. Looks like it has enough stuff to be challenging (if not impossible) for a while. Quote Name: Matt Carl Runner, Graphomaniac, Steel Bending Fiend

There was a decent free guide somewhere that helped me get the technique down. Quote Name: Matt Carl Runner, Graphomaniac, Steel Bending Fiend

matthcarl Posted August 9, 2007 Author Posted August 9, 2007 (edited) Here was my first attempt at bending square steel. Off-Center Bend Edited August 9, 2007 by The Writer Quote Name: Matt Carl Runner, Graphomaniac, Steel Bending Fiend
crobb1320 Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 wow that is off center, you are probally holding it with one hand and the other hand is doing all the work, without even knowing it.just an imbalance,i used to do the same thing, once you start to get stronger at it,your bends will be more centered.i like to mark the center of the bar as many others do. good luck with your bending. neilkaz Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Nice bends, but I also recommend marking the center of everything you bend and trying to get centered bends. Do this on stuff that is reasonably easy for you and your form should improve for your tougher bends, .. neilkaz .. Quote
