neilkaz Posted August 3, 2007 Posted August 3, 2007 I'm sure this has been asked and answered here more than once, but I know absolutely nothing about leather and would appreciate some help from you experienced benders concerning what grade(s) of leather to purchase to make our own wraps here. John Beatty sent me some stuff for wraps a while ago, and my step son, Matt, and I both determined that our best wraps were to use the old leathers gamidon gave me over 2 years ago on the outside and use some of the reasonably hard white stuff from FBBC on the inside. Total wrapping thickness around 1/4" round is 1 5/16" or 33 mm. I can get the crushdown to 1 3/4" with this thickness if I have the wraps just right and really crank into the final crush. However, we only have one set of wraps, and with Matt bending lots of 1/4" SQ now, they really are getting chewed up. The other leathers John sent really aren't as good as what we are using. Anyhow, we each need a new set of good wraps. Can anyone please suggest what thickness and types or grades of leather from Tandy to use ? Thx ,, neilkaz ,, Quote
AP Posted August 3, 2007 Posted August 3, 2007 Bring your old good wraps to the store and see what stacks up. You could even bring a nail to wrap up to check the thickness, of course with use the thickness will reduce a bit. Quote Pastrami on Wry

Yep, that's our plan, but I'm hoping someone who uses Tandy leather has some specific recommendations if they remember type and grade etc. ty .. neilkaz .. Quote
nickr104 Posted August 3, 2007 Posted August 3, 2007 Here is a link to what I use from them. http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/products.asp?dept=159 Premium Leather Trim Piece Black 4040-60 or the 4040-01. 2 hunk come together I cut each one in 2 so I got 4 chuncks and use 2 in each hand. They work really well. I have used them for over a year and have yet to put a hole in them. I am lucky we have a Tandy Leather right here in town. climber511 Posted August 3, 2007 Posted August 3, 2007 Tandy 4040-03 Suede Trim Tandy 4040-04 Suede Trim I have one piece light tan one piece medium brown This make a double wrap about 1.25" on a 5/16" bar after some use. I got them from John Eaton - he cut them in half for me - if I did it again, I'd leave them longer simply because I like the extra length, especially for reverse bending. Still the advice of going and trying different ones seems the best idea. Let us know what you find. Cannon Posted August 3, 2007 Posted August 3, 2007 I walked into Tandy and they had a big table with remnants and other random-sized things. I got about 12 sqft of great leather for $10. I've cut about a dozen wraps for myself and friends and I still have lots of leather. Quote
John Beatty Posted August 3, 2007 Posted August 3, 2007 As a point, The stuff I got in the last two batches is much better than the stuff I originally had which was the batch you got, Neil. The current stuff is heavy suede like the old stuff Greg gave me at the first BBB. Quote I like heavy things.

John is the lleather that you had originally the stiff light colored stuff hard to roll at first. The Stufff you sent us like a month ago is terrific leather, and the stuff from back in april was the stiff stuff. with this newer leather its easy to roll .Very nice leather all cut symetrical too. I fold it in half lengthwise until it is trashed from use, then fold it sideways. On a side note, I've done some in-store nail testing, and used a home depot employee's bib as a wrap!
