Brad Manion Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 I achieved a big milestone tonight, yet I do not own a digital camera. One of the guys I train with, who does have a digital video camera, is in Mississippi till Wednesday. Just a little bit inconvenient when I live in St. Louis. Anyways, I took a thick phonebook (St. Louis Yellow Pages, about 2-1/8" to 2-1/4" thick) and tore it, not in 2, but into 3 pieces using the grip-and-rip technique!! The cover split a little bit, so the tear wasn't as pretty as something Dennis Rogers or Pat Povilaitis would do, but I was very proud nonetheless. My brothers were amused, not only by the tear itself, but by my subsequent running around the house doing the 1-handed King Kong chest thumping . Hopefully, I can get a video up sometime next week when my friend gets back into town. Quote

Brad Manion Posted July 31, 2007 Author Posted July 31, 2007 Thanks guys. Although this was my first time doing the 3-piece grip-and-rip phonebook tear, and I was very proud, doing this is not as tough as it sounds. I have decent pinch-grip strength, but nothing impressive considering my company on the GripBoard. Consider that these are my PRs for pinch work: right hand = 2 x 35# and 4 x 10#, left hand = 2 x 25# and 4 x 10#. There are 2 ways to do this 3-piece grip-and-rip, and if you're strong enough for the first, you can tear a phonebook into 4 pieces, just like Pat Povilaitis. I get an initial grip-and-rip tear started very close to the binding. I go through all the pages and then maybe an inch down the vertical axis. Now, to get the second tear started, you can either: 1) Keep your hands on the same side of the book, but just slide them closer to the unbound portion of the pages. This takes a pretty good deal of strength and focus, especially if your initial tear was too deep through the vertical axis. 2) Flip the book over and do the grip-and-rip a little bit closer to the halfway portion of the book. This is how I did my 3-piece grip-and-rip. Once you've gotten both tears started, work each one down the book a little at a time, and if you don't tear either of them too much relative to the other, your covers should hold together enough to make a good photo once you've completed your tears. Now, if you've actually tried both ways, you'll probably agree that technique #2 is definitely the way to go when first trying this feat, but if you want to do the 4-piece GNR, you'll have to combine techniques #1 and #2. Good luck to everybody else who tries this. It feels great to be able to do this. Quote
