Hubgeezer Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 Kevin Meskew, a board member (ironwarrior) here, has produced 7 grip contests since 2004 in Southern California. The last 5 of them have been at his small gym in Chatsworth (San Fernando Valley). Typically, he has a "decathlon" in the Spring, and something like a heptathlon in the late Fall. Scoring has been done using a system similar to a track and field decathlon, with about half of the events scored using Dale Harder's point system, with the other half using our best approximation of what we believe it would be if he had those events in his charts. Imperfect, yes, but it works. The last contest he had did not have much advance notice, so the attendance suffered. In November of 2006, there was a great turnout, but the recent one only had 5 entrants. I would like to attend his next one, and he is throwing out two tentative dates: 1. Saturday, October 27, or 2. Saturday, November 3. He likes the "Decathlon" for the this one, but I am more interested in a Heptathlon this time around. The likely events would be: 1. Grippers 2. Apollon's Axle (Double Overhand) Deadlift 3. Vertical Bar lift 4. Rolling Thunder 5. IronMind Hub 6. Wrist Roller for time, 75 pounds, around 7 feet up(you stand on a stool), over 3 inch thick bar 7. Two Hand Plate Pinch When it has been a 10 event contest, the following addtional events kicked in: 8. One Hand Deadlift with 3 3/8 inch thick bar 9. IronMind Pinch Block 10. Trap Bar hold for time with 500 pounds You could switch hands as you go, but only one hand is actually contested. So, all that being said, the questions are: a) Who wants to go? b) Which date do you prefer? c) If you are competing, do you want 7 events or 10? I will start: a) I will be there. b) Either date works for me. c) I would prefer 7 events, but won't moan if the majority or the promoter want more. Thanks, and hope folks weigh in on this. ironwarrior Posted July 28, 2007 Posted July 28, 2007 I will do my best to go on either date So far 4 confirmed, 1 semi-confirmed, Nov 3rd and 7 events seems to be the consensus right now...a few chimer-inners would give us a clearer picture... Also, congrats to Bill McCaslin (FatBoy) for his fine performance at the recent USPF Venice Beach PushPull meet. He BP'd about 370-380 (correct me if wrong Bill) and DL'd 501, with a back condition most would classify as below standard...not bad for a comeback! IW Quote

We could get all or possibly only one. I think this will be the best or second best (November 2006 is best so far) turnout to date. Sorry you are a no-go Ronnie. Quote

We could get all or possibly only one. I think this will be the best or second best (November 2006 is best so far) turnout to date. Sorry you are a no-go Ronnie. Just got myself a full time job for when my current one finishes - i'll definitely be able to afford the flight now Mike. Oct27 would be a better date for me. Supermagnamon's list of events look great - but i also think DO bending to under 2'' in 5 minutes could be thrown in the mix. Sam Quote real name: Sam Solomi
Hubgeezer Posted August 2, 2007 Author Posted August 2, 2007 Supermagnamon's list of events look great - but i also think DO bending to under 2'' in 5 minutes could be thrown in the mix.Sam 1. Supermagnamon's list may look great to you, but it is bastardizing the list I mention at the beginning. If we take out grippers and vertical bar, it not only removes two of the three "standard" grip events, it tilts the point system to the Big Handed folks. Whether Ronnie was kidding or not, I think those two should stay. As far as the Hub goes, I haven't really done Hub work in 8 months due to an injury, but I would like to keep it in, as this is about the only contest on the planet where it is contested. I won't even protest if the controversial "vertical bar" method of hub lifting is used, even though it is a different event than the "claw" method. It is not a "do or die" event for me anymore, but I like it for Nostalgia purposes more than anything. If the group wants to substitute something else for it (like the trap bar hold) I could live with it. Besides, maybe Thor will be the first person ever to do 100 pounds any style in a contest. When you are the first, no one can ever take that away from you... 2. The most serious issue, and folks should weigh in on this again, is the date. Thor has a problem with October 27, and COC #3 (Sam from England who I had invited after the British Grips) may have a problem with November 3. It looks like everyone else is okay with either. Can we go around again with preferences on the dates? 3. I made a decision a year ago that I would not enter contests where bending is contested. That is why I passed on GGC this year. I avoid exercises that hurt my elbows, and recently I got a bar dip apparatus. I can't even do bar dips without my elbows hurting! (I also can't do curls, or high pulls very high either). I fixed my back so I could deadlift to be in grip contests, but there is no hope for me to fix my elbows at this stage in my life. Guys, weigh in on the dates again. Thor, because Sam will be traveling 6000 miles, if you are the only one with the problem with the November 3 date, it will probably be October 27. Sam, if 2 or 3 "regulars" have a problem with October 27, you may have to rethink the date. And guys, weigh in on the Hub Lift as well. Like I said, for me it is Nostalgia, as I would have never entered a contest in the first place if it wasn't for that event. If Thor is the only one who wants it, I say leave it in, as I would like to see him do 100 in a contest. Mike aka Hubgeezer Quote
CoC#3 Posted August 2, 2007 Posted August 2, 2007 Ok i'll go for Nov 3 - i don't want to cause Thor not to be able to enter this comp. Supermagnamon's list with the addition of grippers? I think every grip event should contest grippers. The one hand deadlift on a 3 3/8'' bar is gonna be beast - i really want to see that event kept in! Quote real name: Sam Solomi
lone Wolf Posted August 2, 2007 Posted August 2, 2007 Keep the V-bar and the Hub lift I too would to see Adam do 100 in this lift and if Odd comes we need to have the Axle there I like to see him break his record of 454 he did that so easy the last time. V-Bar and Hub will make up 28.6% of the events! What are we looking at, say 12 competitors? Rising bar or Round system? Paper or plastic? You guys want Meet T-shirts made up? Mike, how about if I email you tables I used at the last comp? We should put some 'in stone' before the next contest! Wish me luck Aug 11th at the USPF Nationals in Vegas Kevin Quote
THOR Posted August 3, 2007 Posted August 3, 2007 Guys this sound awesome, i really appreciate everyone arguing in my defence and absence... The reason why i wasnt able to make it to the 27 is that i have a wedding to go to and i cant get out of it...(no its not mine) Coc thanks alot for making acceptions on my account I still like 10 -50 events but if 7 is the number than thats what its going to be, remember if we cant decide on what 7 to use i dont think that there will be to much objecting in having 8 events Im really looking forward to this comp. and shirts would be cool too, and i hope i dont let everyone down on the hub THOR Quote "....with the strength of thirty men in the grip of each hand" Beowulf
