Ray Hansford Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 I just joined a new gym yesterday which has a whole range of grip tools available, Hubs, thickbars, eagle loops and HG grippers. Yes Im sooo happy to have found a real strength gym (No more baby oil covered show offs) Anyway, I picked up the HG's to try them out. (Keep in mind I have closed the #3 once a long time ago and currently cant close it or the 2.5). Mashed the 100,150,200,250 straight away, while I was standing there wondering why they were so easy, I saw the gym owner looking at me with his eyes almost popping out! He said "no one here has been past the 200 before" He gave me the 300 to try and while it was more of a strain to close, I did it fairly easy. Only thing I noticed is they are thinner than the COC's, so maybe the fact I can get more 'around' them at the start could be a factor. Whats your opinions on the HG's? Nice work mashing those grippers, sounds like an awesome gym with all that equipment, they need better grippers though. I think the Hg250 rates around the COC #2, the HG300 is like a 2.5 or maybe less in my opinion. My HG400 is the same as my #3. You have to be careful with rating HG grippers as they vary a huge amount from what people have said here on Gripboard - some guys here may well say that there HG300 is identical to the no.3, the one i tried was more like 2.5. spahn ranch Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 If what I read is true (can't find were it was), the HG300's in particular have a notoriously high variance. Pretty damn good mashing of that gripper rack anyway! Quote Thomas, 36/6'1.5"/205/8.25" hands MMS RH #2.5, LH #2; CCS RH & LH #2 Strength and honour

mbcx6pmw Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 That does sound like a sweet gym, I've never come across one like that before! They do have thinner handles and also a narrower spread than the CoC. My HG300 is one of the tougher ones, round about #3 level. I treat them as a sort of back up set, that I can file and otherwise abuse and not feel too bad about it. Quote Paul Wood

vikingsrule92 Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 Great mashing of the grippers! Man I wish I had a gym like that sounds pretty awesome. HGs in general vary a lot but the 300 even more so. I've seen them vary from a #2 level to a #3 level so you can't really be sure. Quote
JasonL Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 I think the COC #2 is harder then the HG250 Quote Jason Lutan You're not your job. You're not how much money you have in the bank. aquilonian Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 (edited) I dont think they compare. Totally different equipment, that in my opinion serves different (although related) functions. The HGs feel much better for inverted closes because of the narrow spread, and the IMs feel better for regular TNS closes again because of the spread. If you use the MM set then it really doesnt matter. if the 250 is too easy grab a 300, or if a #2 is too easy grab a #3. Easy enough for me. as far as handle thickness I could SWEAR that the IM's had the skinniest handles and that the Beffbuilders had the Thickest, and that HGs fell somewhere in the middle. WEll.....I put the tape and calipers to all three brands and they are ALL THE SAME. They just FEEL different. The Barabans had the thickest handles. BeefBuilders are still (as MObster put once) "the dogs nads". Edited July 26, 2007 by aquilonian Quote
OldGuy Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 Beefbuilder, Ironmind, excellent. HG look poor and are crap quality. RB look good, worth collecting, don't feel good in use. Quote Not afraid to ruffle feathers!

I agree on BB and IM, but my RBs are all excellent, not only look great but the ones that I have (that I can close) are very smooth and after a small amount of initial seasoning down, have remained consistent. Ray Hansford Posted July 27, 2007 Author Posted July 27, 2007 Looks like their is a big variation to the HG's, Comparing to my COC's I would put this 300 at 2.2 or 2.3 Funny part is I am now a minor celebrity at the gym, When I went in today the owner almost threw the 300 at me and I ended up with a crowd of about 10 people around me eager to see the 300 closed. Told the owner I might have to charge an appearance fee from now on One of the biggest guys in the whole gym tried it (He's about 130kgs,and he's not fat!!) Didnt get close at all, but he got the 200 after a few goes. Still love this gym, So many strongman toys to play with Best part, they are organising a strongman comp in about 4-5 months.
