urbandruid Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 (edited) Is there any difference in difficulty? Cause I can't find G5 Carriage bolts for the life of me, but I found some properly dimensioned Hex head bolts. I imagine they're tougher since they have a smooth shaft... but maybe that's just wishful thinking since I managed to bend one. Tough little buggers... considerable leap from the 60d's I've been bending. Edited July 18, 2007 by urbandruid Quote
Tim71 Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 I've never seen G5 carriage bolts. However G2 hex bolts are considerably tougher than the carriage counterparts because of the smooth shaft. You did a nice bend there. G5s calibrate anywhere from 385 lbs to over 400. Nice job! Tim Quote
urbandruid Posted July 18, 2007 Author Posted July 18, 2007 I plan on gaining some proficiency on the g5's and work my way down to a 5" before stepping up to some 5/16" HRS (tried a 7" piece today and BARELY put an almost IMPERCEIVABLE wobble in it). Seems to be a common plan for building up to the red nail. How far does a bend like this g5 put me from being able to bend the red? Quote

You'll be able to do 5/16" HRS before you can do a 5" G5, those are VERY tough bolts. Probably around a month to a month and a half away with some hard work. it took me a month to go from the 5.5" G5 to the bastard (a little easier than a new red) but it varies from person to person. Tim71 Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 The road to the red isn't the same for everybody like was said. 5/16 hrs is a good one to have as a first attempt at anything 5/16 and 7 inches long. For some the 7 inch length is really awkward at first. I personally think a 5 inch G5 is harder than a G8 but alot don't. You can also get national 5/16 zinc plated as a good step after the HRS. Then maybe the steel works HRS or CRS which calibrated identical as a final step before the bastard / red levels. 1/4 inch square is good to for somewhere around the 5/16 zinc level. Good luck! ox3782 Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 I am quite sure caridge bolts are threaded all the way up to the head in that case they would be much eaiser than the standard G5 bolt because there is less acutal material. If I am right I wouldent bother with them especially if they are hard to find. urbandruid Posted July 19, 2007 Author Posted July 19, 2007 Thanks for your help everyone! You guys are some helpful bastards (those of you with certs anyways). I really appreciate the insight. I'm looking forward to taking down the red now, gotta kick up the bending. Quote
