Tim71 Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 Great job. That drill rod is fun and really gives a good workout. Tim Quote
bencrush Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 Nice bends! The 1/4" Drill Rod is some nice stuff. I like it almost as much as the 1/4" Stainless. Cutting it really short helped me finally bend a 4" Grade 5 DU. Quote
neilkaz Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 Good stuff here, Charlie !! A few questions for you and others. Is all your stuff from Fastenal ? How does 1045 steel compare to the 1018 I have ? Re: the hex...I took a good look at the 4 pieces of 1/4" my kid bent a few days ago and two bent on the flat, one on an edge (like square which always bends on the edge) and the other inbetween a flat and edge. You are killing the .250 drill rod and that 80-85 deg kinked stumper will fall when you crank into next time at peak strength. Allow me to suggest .257 and .261 drill rod as your next step to the hex. ... neilkaz .. (ordering some drill rod tomorrow for his meager steps) Quote

(ordering some drill rod tomorrow for his meager steps) yes all my stuff is from fastenal, its good stuff and its cheap, plus there is one near my work. the 1018 and 1045 feel the same to me,i bought the 1045 to see if it was harder,if it is it is only slightly.i would like to get some 9/32" drill rod,and will check on it next time i go to get stock. Alawadhi Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 congrats! Quote Read about me in my biography. neilkaz Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 The beauty of drill rod is that it comes in so many sizes. However, 9/32 is half way between 1/4 and 5/16 and with drill rod being harder than CRS, I think 9/32 will be much harder than your hex and might appoach 1/4" square. .. neilkaz ..suggesting you try a piece of .257 and then ,261 drill rod.. bencrush Posted July 14, 2007 Posted July 14, 2007 Most Fastenals don't carry 9/32" Drill Rod. Mine will special order it, so I ordered a bunch for DU bending. It's solid stuff if you're not able to bend the 1/4" Hex it'll probably stump you. It rated at 310 at 7" IIRC. That's harder than an Easy 70D Nail for reference. Quote
crobb1320 Posted July 14, 2007 Author Posted July 14, 2007 thanks for the tips and good comments guys,i appreciate it.next time i go for stock i will see what is available.
