BrandonA Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 Hello all...My name is Brandon..I am new to serious grip training. I am currently on a quest to loose my baby fat. Was in good shape in high school and then college hit, bam...50 lbs later...yuck.... My current training is heavy, high volume, basic compound moves with my favorite bodybuilding movements thrown in...once i get the fat cut off, then it will be time to hit the power lifting training petty hard...I live in Tucson, with my girl, we are expecting out 1st child on Oct 1st..pretty excited about that.... So my quest here on this board is to rip a phone book in half...old school raw power...so here goes..my 1st entry...any advise/suggestions are more than welcome...starting simple... Done at gym- 2 fat 25's plate pinchs 4 x 30 secs a pop... ( I super setted these with seated dumbell curls) palm up wrist curls - 4 sets of 12 with 25 lbs db.. (super setted with low pully straight bar curls) plam down wrist curls - 4 sets of 12 with 12lb db - much harder and my left hand is a bit stupid.... (super setted with 21's) got home and grabbed my cheap 5 dollar valeo gripper.... 4 sets of 25 slow crushes each hand 4 sets of crush and hold to fail each hand 3 sets of ten thumb and two finger cruhes as hard as i could, each hand... will do this 3 times a week for a bit.... my full training journey is posted on aminalpak .com.... http://forum.animalpak.com/showthread.php?t=3139&page=28 thanks... -B Quote "dont ever give up...dont ever fall....remember the code. vikingsrule92 Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 I look forward to reading your future entries. First suggestion, buy real grippers, Ironmind would probably be best for you. Use them and progress with them. Secondly, look at the beginner's routine for grip here http://www.gripboard.com/index.php?showtopic=12608 it's great for building a base and I would recommend it over what you're doing now (no offense). I look forward to meeting you on Saturday and Aaron, myself, and Wes i'm sure will be more than willing to help you with your goals in any way we can. Quote

mbcx6pmw Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 Welcome Brandon and congrats on the baby. There's a fair bit of technique to phone book tearing, this article is a good start: http://www.heavysports.com/emag/Clay_Edgin/phonebooks.html To do finger curls you hold a barbell with a double overhand grip, like you were at the top position of a deadlift, open your hand so the bar rolls down towards your fingertips, then close it again. acorn Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 Brandon if you have some old phone books, bring them over on Saturday. I would be happy to give a tutorial on phone book tearing. Clay's article on it is excellent too. I learned from it. Congrats on the upcoming little one. Also the Grip gathering will start at 1pm. I'll pm you with directions and contact info later today. vikingsrule92 Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 Good workout Brandon. Keep stretching your shoulders out and work with really light stock on your form and you'll have it before long. Also, I would recommend getting some IM grippers if you have enough $$$. Probably a 1, 1.5, and a 2 (and a 2.5 if you have enough $) for your strength. Stick with the training and you'll be making amazing gains before long man. Quote

BrandonA Posted September 3, 2007 Author Posted September 3, 2007 Had a training session over at Arron's house with Derrick...We did a little of everything...Started with grippers...I closed the COC #2, after the guys showed my where to put it in my hand and get the set right, it was pretty easy...Derrick said it was a pretty wide set, so that was cool.....Then on to some pinch work..Arron recently got at loadable pinch hub, dont remember what I worked up to on that...well over 100# i think, the last pull tore a nice chunk of skin off my right thumb and a smaller chunk of the left....so I stopped there ( with some urging from Arron...lol)... Boy what was next...loading pin and 4" pinch block....single hand...that was weaker for me due to the blood thumb, so i tried the rolling thunder...think I managed 125#...did not write anything down...oh well...hahah.... Then on to bending...we were all playing with the blobs pretty much the whole session....On to bending...I still have so much to learn...I bent 1/4" dia hrs 6" long, 3 times...really easy...Derrick gave me a 1/4 hex...All i could manage was a pretty good kink....worked on my 60d from last time, did not make a dent...wobbled a blue nail....I need lots more work....Have trouble with my shoulder flexibility.. And then on to v-bar...worked on the 2"...Not bad for my 1st time out...I pulled 200# with my left hand...which is my "weaker" hand..pretty cool... Then after that I was on to axel deads....On a olympic bar, I am good for over 400# and my loser back was whiped after rack pulls on Friday night, so I stayed light with the axel...worked up to 295#...weight flew up, but the thick bar was a huge difference for me and I almost dropped it, but was able to hold it at the top for a good while... Derrick hit some big PR's bending, Arron bents some big stuff as always, and he pulled over 250 on the 2' V-bar.....It was a great time...very focused and I got some great help from the guys...Next stop....COC #3...... Huge thanks to Arron for hosting..Cant wait for next time... -B Quote "dont ever give up...dont ever fall....remember the code. Strength and Honor." -rcrott1
vikingsrule92 Posted September 3, 2007 Posted September 3, 2007 (edited) It was a great session Brendaen good to see you again. hahaha our names are spelled Aaron and Derek. Anyway, also the 1/4" x 6" piece was CRS, just not as strong of CRS as the Blue. Also, the "pinch hub" is a 2HP set up just to clarify and I think you pulled like 138 or something like that. Great Job yesterday you beat me at everything but the bending, and Aaron, well it's pretty hard to beat him at anything. Edited September 3, 2007 by vikingsrule92 Quote

BrandonA Posted October 20, 2007 Author Posted October 20, 2007 Just a quick update, I am still alive..LOL...I have been focusing my training for a Push/Pull meet in December, hit some pr's on bench today, good times...Momma and Baby are doing great. Baby Kaydee is going great, she has one hell of a grip, my chest hair can attest to that..LOL...I hit my curls and such with I have a chance, but that has been light lately...I will attack it soon...cant wait for the next training session... -B Quote "dont ever give up...dont ever fall....remember the code. BrandonA Posted March 3, 2008 Author Posted March 3, 2008 Been awhile for an update...Not really hitting grip spefic training as of late, have to work out in the early mornings and have been pressed for time. I will start mixing it in when I start up my cardio sessions soon....But that dont mean I have been sitting on my butt sence the Az comp...... I ordered at #2, 2.5 and 3 COC and been playing with them lately. I also got some IM pads, and ordered a beginners bag from FBBC..... I am waiting for the beginners bad, but have the IM pads, so off to Ace I went and picked up some d60's and some spikes to play with... Last night I did a pretty solid bending session, here's how it went down.... 1/4x7 hrs square 1/4x6 hrs square 1/4x6 crs rnd d60 that i started at Aaron's house a looooooong time ago...polished it off 2 more d60's Had a 1/4x6 crs hex that I had wobbled some time back, put some more wobble in it...lol.... Brand new IM pads are a bear to work with, the dont roll at all, but with time they should break in....most of the bends were done with dbl IM pads, the crs rnd was single pads and one of the nails as well....that kind hurt, but no biggie.... Grippers....5 closes with #2 right hand, 5 attempst with the left, squeezed on the #3 both hands, nothing to write home about.... Decent day, still having issues getting the stock under my chin, really have work on the sholder flexablilty and making sure I have ZERO pump in the bi's....Arms measured at 18 1/2" yesterday, and I dont do any direct arm work...HAHAH.... I got the 1/4x6 crs under my chin and it just melted, so I know the "feeling" I am looking for, just need more pratice....have 4# of d60's to play with.... -B Quote "dont ever give up...dont ever fall....remember the code.
