GonnaGetAGrip Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 My grip is really weak. I can barely close the 100lb gripper... I can close it with my right hand about 2 times before it's practically impossible for me. Can I do anything with dumbbells to get my grip up instead of buying a lighter gripper after I spent money on this one? Quote GonnaGetAGrip
Alawadhi Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 You can get strong grip not only with grippers. Besides gripper strength doesnt equal handshake strength. I am telling this because many people do think so. Did you tried block weights? I bet you will be repping the 100LB gripper (is it IronMind trainer or the HG100?) forever. So try block weights, thick bar, pinch, DO deadlifts, thick rope pullups, finger curls on olympic bar, and grippers between now and then. Sean Dockery Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 Pick up a dumbell in each hand. Hang on for as long as you can. When you can count to 30 nice and slow without setting them down, move up to a heavier pair of dumbells. Alternatively, you can walk around carrying the dumbells. An early COC (Tyce Saylor) claimed his training for the #3 consisted mostly of carrying 100lbs dumbells for distance. Quote Patient consistency will always triumph over fickle enthusiasm. AP Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Your strength on the grippers will go up fast too, so if you can close it after only having it a little while you'll be repping it easy in no time. Negatoves, deep set work and just playing around with it will get you past the 100. Other grip stuff is needed though anyway if you want a strong all around grip. Quote Pastrami on Wry

Sybersnott Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Can I do anything with dumbbells to get my grip up instead of buying a lighter gripper after I spent money on this one? Sure, if your DB are heavy and they are also thick-handled. Have you thought about using a grip machine - a basic plate loader? You load it up to the weight you want and go to work (I recommend the BB if you decide to go that route). You can either buy one OR make one yourself! Quote "I have always been strong. Can I do anything with dumbbells to get my grip up instead of buying a lighter gripper after I spent money on this one? If you have hex dumbbells, grab them across the hex end and carry them around. I would more recommend negatives with the current grippers as they seem to be helping me a bit. Set them in your hand, crush them as much as you can then push the hand into your leg to close them the rest of the way. Pull away from your leg, hold on as tightly as you can and try not to let them open. After you have done some normal attempts, do this a couple of times, then set them down, then try again in a few minutes, only a few times total. Then pick them up again in a couple of hours and repeat the same thing. Unless you are much different than me, this probably won't tire you out and you can just keep doing it. You may need to take breaks to let your hands (skin) heal though. YMMV, I'm pretty new, but this is working for me working up to the #2. Quote

Hand is more open when shaking hand than when closing gripper. Try shaking yourself. And when gripper is in handshake position it haven't much resistanse there. And i have noticed stong handshake needs strong THUMB. Again, try shaking yourself without pressing thumb down and with thumb. Quite big difference? lloyd80s Posted June 28, 2007 Posted June 28, 2007 Hi Gonnagetagrip! I know you can't close the gripper you have but this gripper will really help you improve your grip strength anyways! You can try negs with this gripper and see how fast you strength grows. Take the gripper and use BOTH hands to get the handles to touch, then hold the handles closed with one hand for as long as you can. Do 5 sets of 1 hold for each hand a couple of times a week. Doing this gets your hands and fingers used to the maximum pressure that the gripper will put on your hands. After a short time you'll feel that your hands will feel stronger. Also as you're just starting out it's be a good idea to have a look at some other posts on how to SET a gripper........very important on getting the buggers closed! Good luck mate, this takes time but when you see those handles touch it'll be worth the time and pain Quote IT'S ONLY A SPRING........

But I like to add if your looking for strong handshake. I suggest overall hand strength like blockweights, thick bar, parallel grip machine,..etc. You also need to know that strong handshakes in general are for the big handed people. A person with a average grip but a large hand can infect pain on you while trying to beat him in a handshake. Quote Read about me in my biography. GonnaGetAGrip Posted June 28, 2007 Author Posted June 28, 2007 There most of really been something wrong with me yesterday [i usually end up thinking I can't do something when it's my first time trying] because I can close it 8 reps for 2-3 sets now. Its HG100... I don't know if I'm closing it as far as it can close, the handles don't touch but they are straight and it hurts. Quote GonnaGetAGrip

Try pushing it against your leg or using both hands to close it - wear gloves if it hurts too much. Then you'll get the idea of how far it goes. You may want to order a lower level one to start with though. Quote
GonnaGetAGrip Posted June 28, 2007 Author Posted June 28, 2007 Will closing it to the point where it's completely straight help me get towards actually closing it then? Quote GonnaGetAGrip
the j Posted June 29, 2007 Posted June 29, 2007 Will closing it to the point where it's completely straight help me get towards actually closing it then? Do you mean where the handles are parallel? I imagine any effort you put into closing it as much as you can will help you get towards actually closing it. That said, I think negatives like I described will help as well. Quote
vikingsrule92 Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 (edited) Will closing it to the point where it's completely straight help me get towards actually closing it then? To a certain extent, but you shouldn't focus on partial reps. Do negs, which is where you close the gripper entirely by assisting one hand with the other or with a leg then hold it shut as long as you can (hope this makes sense), and a lot of the things like holding heavy DBs for time, and finger curls, etc. as recommended above. Try buying some regular sporting store grippers like from sports authority or Dicks (they cost about $3 for a pair so they won't hurt your wallet) then closing them. They rate at around 20-30 lbs. while your gripper is probably closer to 50-80 lbs. Doing reps and overcrushes (closing it all the way and holding it closed) with these grippers will help you build up to the bigger HG100. Edited June 30, 2007 by vikingsrule92 Quote
