Dexterity Balls

Recommended Posts

i got a pair of 1 3/8" chinese dexterity balls because i wanted something smaller to help with active recovery so my hands recover faster but theyre not too big so they dont completely fatigue me...and i was wondering how often should i use them to benefit recovery the most? should i just rotate them every once and a while 7 days a week?

I use mine for two minutes and thirty seconds in each direction per hand when I remember to daily.

Well they promote circulation very much so but every few minutes maybe a bit much.If you did that everyday every few minutes you may get an overuse injury like a flared up tendon or something like that. You may want to knock it down to a session like I do before bed or in the morning to wake up your hands and lower arms. They are great but to much of anything with no recovery time is usualy bad.

Try them with your hands palm down.

If that's a no starter, try with your hands vertical first, working towards hands down.

yea ive done that but im worried that itll tire my hands out rather than promote recovery cuz im already getting enough hand workout as it is

Do it! You'll get to the stage where it becomes recuperative...in the mean time it will strengthen and promote neural stuff and tendon strength! ;)

There again, if it feels off or odd, give it a few days 'til it feels OK!

Brookfield calls the dexterity balls one of the best hand exercises that could ever be done. I did them for 10 minutes each hand or so every day in the car on my way to work. I would go through a rotation of clockwise/counterclockwise in the following order.

-Balls Touching - Palm up, palm sideways, palm down, palm up vertical ( ball under ball)

-Balls not Touching- palm up , palm sideways, palm down

I got to the point where I could do them for many minutes palm down with no real fatigue and would cramp up slightly if I did them palm down/not touching after a minute or so. Plus I did them in the morning and I usually do grip in the evening and I never noticed any real fatigue. I have messed around with three balls, but haven't tried them enough to make progress.

I wouldn't worry about tiring out your hand. The more difficult moves do require some strength but I believe that the body will adapt to anything. Doing the balls for several minutes once or twice a day is just going to improve your strength, circulation, and overall hand health, and probably will increase your endurance big time. Good luck.
