barbe705 Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 I've been throwing like a fool for the last couple of weeks in prep. for an upcoming highland games. Sunday night, while throwing the 28, I tore a hole in my hand. Where the ring finger joins the hand it split open. It isn't on the callus but, right above it. I keep my calluses very worn down to avoid this very thing. Does anybody have any advice to get it to heal faster/avoid it in the future? Right now I'm putting Porter's liniment Salve on it at night. sixlitre Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Liquid skin works ok, also keep it clean and moisturized to help it heal faster. Oh, and lay off it until it heals (or wear gloves). As for not happening again, a little lotion a few times a week right before bedtime helps me. Ivarboneless Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 I'm going to let you in on one of gymnastics' greatest kept secrets. We all know that gymnasts rip (tear the skin on their hands) all the time, usually (at least with my luck) this happens the day before a big meet, so we have a lotion thing that I swear works like magic!! Hand E Balm I haven't seen it around in a while and I got my last tub around 10yrs ago, so it may be hard to find. However this stuff has healed a bloody rip for me in 3 days, so it's worth the hunt!!! Competition was three days after I had a dripping blood rip and the Hand E Balm healed it enough in 3 days that I had zero pain on competition day and I swung full highbar, rings, & parallel bars routines. Put a good amount of Hand E Balm on the rip and make sure the rip is covered all day and all night with the Hand E Balm and it will heal in amazing time. Good luck at your competition! j.scribner Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 Brent- carry a small tube of Super Glue in your training bag, and use it in a pinch to glue the edges together, (or glue a ripped-off callous back down) If you know someone in the medical field, get some "Dermabond" adhesive. It comes in a little pledget (like the ammonia whiffers) and you just pop it and dab on. It's a skin glue like Super Glue. I take fish oil and flax oil caps per Chris Rice's recommendations, and it's helped my skin somewhat from tearing. Hope this helps, John Quote The way you train is the way you react. barbe705 Posted June 21, 2007 Author Posted June 21, 2007 Thanks for all of the ideas. I'll look for the hand e bond. I do have super glue in my throwing bag but, I usually leave it behind when I practice and didn't think of it when I went home. Brent Quote Brent Barbe "The truth is often stupid."
